Nicotine Gum as Backup?

Is it a good idea to keep nicotine gum handy in case I have to go without vaping (travelling, dead battery or equipment malfunction) for a while so I don't get tempted to buy cigarettes?

Absolutely.

I'm not a fan of Nicorette myself, but I always carry smokeless tobacco (Ariva or Stonewall) or a small tin of Swedish snus in my purse. I also always have a backup battery and an extra tank with me--just in case.

Keeping some nic gum or lozenges handy is a great idea. I will never go back to smoking, and carry a ridiculous number of spare batteries, extra eliquid and toppers with me at all times. Even walking to the mailbox to check for new mail, , but if it keeps me off of cigarettes, it's worth it.
