    Default 18490 batt` vs 18500 batt

I've read that the 18490 batteries and the 18500 batteries are the same or will at least work in the new 18490 Reos. What are the differences and advantages of both?

As far as I know, there is no difference. Some of the vendors (RTD) refer to the AW IMR 18490 as a 18500. I guess it actually measures as 50.0 mm long. Battery numbers consist of the diameter in mm + the length in mm plus a decimal point. These are nominal, not actual measurements.

    So:

    18490 18 mm diameter 49.0 mm long
    14500 14 mm dia. 50.0 mm long
    18650 18 mm dia. 65.0 mm long
    14250 14 mm dia. 25.0 mm long

So the 18500 is slightly longer than the 18490 but does not compress the spring too much?

Well if your talking the AW IMR thats recommended there is only one .....

Some vendors list it as a 18500 and some 18490 which is whats printed on the red AW label.

The black aw protected battery is an 18500 and it does fit in my 18490 REOs but its to tight for safety IMO.
Plus it seems a touch bigger in dia so it squeezes against the bottle and might not drop away if the spring does compress enough.

Now if your talking other brands which you shouldn't I have no idea what they measure. from past experience the 49 or 50 mm length might vary up or down 3 mm.

So in summary use the RED AW IMR batteries either way they are listed for sale.

Thanks Tim. I was referring to the red jacket AW IMR's. I didn't know the 18500 were protected and not safe chemistry.

Some of the vendors are referring to the red AW IMR 18490 as 18500. If they are protected, they are NOT "IMR".

Just buy these: AW IMR 18490 (18500) 3.7V 1100 mah

No, the AW IMR "18500" IS the AW IMR 18490. Some vendors are just referring to them as 18500's.

The Black AW 18500 1500mAh are not much bigger then the Red AW 18490's

But not long enough to make any difference IMO

I have been using both over the past few months in the Prototype and both work well.
