So how are folks getting their banner and some text in there? I can display my banner no problem, but I can't add any additional text.

Sun, I didn't really want anything at the moment...just I see folks with text and when I tried my own test with a bit, it would'nt accept it.

I assume that if I want something in the future, I should ask a mod really politely?

All you have to do is add the text after the code for your Counter!!
