Good morning, Voltpeeps (hmmm.....sounds familiar, lol).

When I was a kid, the Catholic Church had a rule that parishioners had to fast 12 hours, before receiving communion. What a pain in the butt that was. People got around that rule, simply by not receiving communion, when they went to church. Maybe that's why the church got rid of that rule, as it was doing more harm than good. LOL

Yes, people receive much more frequently now. The rule had people attending Mass early Sunday morning. They didn't have mega-parishes which have to have Masses every hour and a half from 8:00 to 1:00 in order to serve everyone. Not even talking about Saturday evening Masses.

We have a fairly small parish in my neighborhood, 0mg. Saturday Mass is the most popular. I remember the old days, when entire families would walk to church, on a Sunday morning. Afterwards, we all headed across the street, to a small diner, for breakfast. Times have changed around here.

Oh yeah, I forgot this. The ritual was confession on Saturday and Mass on Sunday. My parish doesn't even have confessionals, the church doors are locked most of the time and it's damn near impossible to find a priest, except when there's Mass.

When I was a kid, the church was always open, day and night and a priest was there.

Our parish is very large, and the church is small. They laugh at the bishop who requests head-counts in discovering which parishes could be closed. Afternoon Mass at the VA is good for people who don't like crowds-- I had been going there for months, but with sunup at 5:30, I am ready for the less crowded 8:00 at the parish.

We have Tues eve devotion and Sat eve mass. Confessions are before both. I felt uncomfortable with confession scheduled with nothing else at that time, because of anti-Catholic gossiping imaginations.

The confesssional is remodeled for both face to face and screen. Appointment is nice, especially for something weighty like fifth step.

Closing and consolidating parishes seems to be the latest trend, 0mg. My "home" parish was Notre Dame de Sacre Coeur (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart). Even though members of my family moved to other towns and cities, we still considered that to be our "home". My mom's funeral was held there as well as both sets of my grandparents.

Notre Dame is gone now, closed by the Bishop, for whatever reason that he had.

In some areas, consolidation of ethnic parishes is rampant. In hell-town, that was extremely difficult. Some were so opposed to it that they left the Church!!

Hey, Jerry, you forget that I can read French.
