Haven't done the pinch to the nose thing yet, just kinda put it on the back of my hand right now cuz that seemed the easiest way to do it

    Default New combination

I just tried mixing American sweet snuff with the Dean Swift Inchkenneth in equal portions, and I love the resulting blend. The sweet tones down the powerful perfumey-ness of the Inchkenneth and rounds the whole thing out very nicely. I used Society Sweet, but any American sweet should work.

A small proportion of a Scotch would smoke things up nicely too. I'll have to try that one later.

Many snuff tins come with the boiler-plate "Danger, Danger Will Robinson!" label on them, as required by regulation. I copied this generic little blurb off of TIFWIW:

Nasal Snuff has a 400 year history with no known health problems we know of. However you should be aware that there have not been many modern scientific trials done. Those trials that have been conducted (for example the Poschl study) have backed up the 400 year old anecdotal evidence. To be safe, follow the advice of the Surgeon General. We make no absolute claims one way or the other.

Obviously, snuffers do stuff brown powder containing heaven knows exactly what up their noses, but I haven't found it particularly disgusting or difficult to clean up. I do the occasional nose blow (in a *colored* handkerchief) during the day, but beware of over-blowing or else you'll get the I've-got-a-cold sore nose. I've been doing a daily neti pot for the past year (fantastic practice, that), even before I considered snuffing. If I feel particularly crusty or dried out, I will dribble in some saline nasal spray and give a blow. The nostrils get a good steaming and rubbing in my daily shower. Over-all, no big deal at all. Many sinus ailment sufferers report great relief of their symptoms once they take up snuffing, and I can see that the mentholated snuffs could be quite therapeutic.
Thanks so much for the info Enfield. Neti pot...Learn something new everyday. I'll probably give snuff a try. Sounds like fun!

Snuffing on Gawith Hoggarth SP. I've been liking the SP's lately, especially some Kendal Browns. SP's are all florally and citrusy, with geranium and bergamot. The GW SP is particularly easy to snuff. A couple from Wilson's were way too dry and were hurting me or making me cough no matter what I did. I took my Wilson Kendal Brown and hydrated it overnight and it is much improved (easier to snuff).

I wondered about that for a long time myself, until I tripped across this very informative page about varieties of snuff on the Wilson's of Sharrows website:
Wilsons & Co (Sharrow) Ltd - Varieties of Nasal Snuff

    Summing up SP's: Me Likey!
