Default The New 901 (2009 model)

I received the new 2009 model of the DSE901 from Patrick at the healthysmokeshop.com last week. The selling point for this model is extended battery life and improved vapor production over previous models. My main e-cig of choice has been an 801 (penstyle) but I was looking for something a little more compact and the m401 models don't appeal to me because of the cartridge design.
From the outside, it looks like any other 901 model, though it is a couple mm's shorter. The fit and finish is very good; it has a nice sturdy glossy black paint job. Upon taking down the 901, the first thing I noticed was that there are no model markings on the battery connector nor any other part of the 901 for that matter. The "wicking bridge" inside the atomizer rises higher than previous models which dips deeper in to the cartridge to grab more juice. The cartridge design has also been changed, however, older 901 cartridges DO fit with no issues.
Another big change is the switch in the battery. Previous models used a pressure switch whereas the new 901 now has a sound activated mic switch like the m401. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. Loud music, wind, or any bump to the 901 will activate it; including the removal of the cartridge. Luckily, there is a 7 second cut off that will prevent you from burning out the atomizer. On the plus side, it makes drawing easier and more like that of an analog cigarette. I've been through enough batteries to know that the pressure switches usually gives out before the battery does. Hopefully, the mic switch will address this. As an experiment, I removed the LED cap on the battery and put a couple drops of hot glue in the 2 draw holes on it. This made the mic switch less finicky and has no adverse affect on it's performance.
But hows does it perform you ask? Well, I am quite pleased. In the beginning, it was producing massive amounts of vapor, but very little throat kick. I find this pretty standard with any new atomizer. After a day or so of vaping, the throat kick started. Now, a week later, the vapor production is still as good as it was from day 1. The amount of vapor it produces is on par with my DSE801. While that doesn't sound like much of an improvement, I should add that my 801 is hooked up to a 5volt battery that I made. When compared to the 801 with a regular battery, the new 901 blows it out of the water. The battery life has also improved. I am one of those people who finds themselves constantly vaping all day long. So naturally, I wouldn't expect to get the 12 hr battery life that is claimed for this product, however, I do get between 6 -8 hours on it. If you used this product like an analog cigarette, I could easily see it going for 12 hours on one battery. As with all previous batteries, the same rules apply - charge it for 8 hours before first use and 4 hours there after. Another thing I noticed is that way the battery works. You get nice full draws all the to the point that it dies. While this is nice, the downfall is that you have no way of knowing when the battery is reaching the end of it's charge. It also only flashes about 7 times to inform you of it's depletion (unlike the usual 20-30 times on other models).

    A couple things to note:
As stated before, the mic switch on the battery is finicky but can be remedied easily. One other thing to note is that the 901 is very juice hungry. The atomizer seems to heat up faster than previous models so you will need to keep it a little wetter than you're used to. Whenever I refill my carts, I also throw another drop or two on the atomizer itself. I also find that stuffing my atomizers with tissue/toilet paper every other night to drain them keeps them fresh and adds life. I still have a penstyle atomizer that is 2 months old and still draws like it did when it was new. I've been doing the same with this 901 atomizer and all is well. The last thing to note is that in one of my previous posts, I stated that the battery threads were different than other 901's - this was incorrect. All parts on this model (including the battery) are interchangeable with other 901 models.

I hope this was helpful for anyone looking into buying one of these and feel free to post any questions you might have!

    Sounds great!

The site is sold out right now...

I wonder how the new 901 would compare to the Titan/yeti/dura etc...

ceo...thanks for the detailed review. I always wondered why I have had no problems with my 401 batteries and so much trouble with my other batteries. I didn't know that the 401s had a mic switch...to be honest I didn't know what a mic switch was.

Does anyone else sell the new model and spare batteries? It sound like a very good model.

I'm sure there are other resellers out there that have it; I'm just not sure who. I'm interested in that myself because I'd like to know that I can easily get replacement parts without relying on one seller.

Ceo...I have heard that the new Bestecig device BE901 has the mic switch batteries that are compatible with the 901s. They sell them real cheap too. I don't know if their atomizers are like yours though.

Thanks for the review. It explains alot about my 901 from Patrick...actually bought 2 kits.

This is my first ecig after weeks of reading reviews. And you are definitly right about it being a juice-pig.

Has anyone done a measurement of how much liquid the cart is capable of holding? I read on a retailers page that it holds 1mm of juice.

Sounds good. I wish they had changed the number though, to say 9012 or something so we know what we're buying.

I think Heaven Gifts tend to have the newest stuff in from the factory that makes the DSE models. I had a few 901's from them a few months ago with the mic switch but wasn't hugely impressed with the atomisers. They were OK though.

I had a new order from them last week - I didn't get any 901's but did get DSE801 pens. These were using the mic switch before but now seem to have changed back to a mechanical switch. I think they had quite a few complaints about the mic switches. On the 801's they've also made changes to the atomiser compared to the last lot I had - the new ones seem to wick better and have a much higher wire bridge.
Mainly using: Megalodon, Mako, Uranos, Phidias, Reo Grand, Lavatube, Ego-T, 3.7v & 5v Box Mods. Bulli A2, DID, ERA, Cobra, Cyclon V2 rebuildables. Stop the EU ban in the proposed Tobacco Products Directive! See here.

m201 and m401 have a mic switch and I like them a lot since the batteries are super durable...I only drip and get ton of liquid in there and never have killed a switch. I have killed 2 mechanical switches after a couple of weeks of heavy use. So in my limited experience I give mic switches a big thumbs up.
