T.S.F.A. Announces Research Project « TN Smoke Free Association

For Immediate Release:
The Tennessee Smoke Free Association is happy to announce the first effort to support an independent research project on tobacco harm reduction. Confirming our dedication as a non-profit association to present the facts and truth about tobacco harm reduction and electronic cigarettes, we have decided to fund a research project proposed by Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos and his team.
The research project will evaluate the consistency, repeatability and magnitude of nicotine delivery from the liquid to the aerosol using new-generation atomizers and devices compared to 1st generation electronic cigarettes. This is a protocol which was prepared since last year by Dr Farsalinos’ team, but was never performed due to lack of funding. We are happy and honored to announce that, through relentless effort by two prominent members of the electronic cigarette community, Dimitris Agrafiotis and Phil Busardo, TSFA has secured the necessary funds to support this project.
This research protocol addresses one of the main criticisms about electronic cigarettes: that they do not work consistently in terms of nicotine delivery. This criticism has been publicly addressed both by US (FDA) and European Union authorities. However, it is based on studies evaluating 1st generation devices. Our experience has shown that new-generation devices probably work better than “cigalikes”, and this is the reason why most dedicated vapers are using such atomizers. However, this experience should be verified through an independent research study. This investigator-initiated and investigator-driven protocol will examine this issue. It is our belief that this project will expand the knowledge on electronic cigarettes and will provide valuable information not only to the regulators but also to consumers, so that they make appropriate choices and succeed in switching from smoking to the less harmful vaping.
