Don't completely remove the sting from the body of the atomizer. Just make sure the string isn't caught underneath the bridge and being burnt by the heating element.
This is what causes the excessive heat and bad taste. This and any stray fibers of cartridge material that may be stuck down there. Do remove any stray pieces of cartridge material.
When the string is on the side of the bridge, it will come in contact with the wicking material instead of the heating element.
If done correctly, an atomizer that you have basically given up as being dead should work like new.
This has been my experience with a 510 at least.
Use some type of pick and work the string out instead of a tweezers. If you use a tweezers you could end up pulling the string completely out of the atomizer.

If you are having problems with your e-cig burning while in your pocket or in purse the easiest solution is.....
DISASSEMBLE IT!
If the atty is not attached to the battery it will not turn on!
If you never let it get dry or burn too hot, this material wont burn.
Also, from personal experience, taking the fiber out from under the bridge will make it work differently, not necessarily better, but differently.

I don't see any stray strings or anything down in mine, and it's tasted bad since day 1. I did blow it out, tasted ok for one session of vaping. I switched attys, life is fine. I wonder if there's anything I can do to rescue that old atty.

This is INCORRECT information.
On the 510 atty (not other models) there is a wick that is trapped under the wicking material at the top of the bridge, and it runs directly down to the heating element under the bridge. You should be able to see part of the loop sticking out the side of the bridge.
The wick is supposed to be caught under the bridge.... do not pull it free!

Wow, all this is very confusing. How do I get rid of this burnt, nasty taste coming from my Smoking Everywhere e-cigarette?
Warning - I am a beginner!

Whenever I get a burnt taste, it just means that I need to top off or switch out the cart filler... then it goes away. I don't have to dry burn or clean my atomizer... I've been using the same atomizers for over two months now and I vape quite a bit, and they're still going strong... When I first came upon these forums and read how people were going through an atomizer a week, I thought I would need a ton, so I bought 20+ atomizers of all different types (801, 510, 901), but I have not had the same issue... Just because you get a burnt taste, it doesn't mean the atty is bad... you just have to refill. It makes sense that if there's no liquid in the cartridge, then you're just going to taste burning filler... right?

They mean a REALLY burnt taste. One that tastes like molten metel dripping into dog poo and topping off or cleaning won't make go away.

Okay, this post makes the most sense to me. I have a Smoking Everywhere cigarette, which I am taking for granted is a "501" automatic battery style? I am not even sure of this the right terminology. So far it has been great, but I have had it just about 2 weeks or so.
Today it comes up giving a very foul metal taste. Really nasty. Out of all the posts I have read so far, this one makes sense. So I went digging with a paper clip and discovered what I believe you are calling a "string". It had caked on stuff, what I think may have been old, burnt cartridge material. Anyhow, when I loosened up this "string" with the caked on material with the paper clip, the stuff came loose. Now I just have what amounts to a steel string hanging out of my atomizer.
Is this the way it is supposed to be?
Unfortunately I do not have any new carts to test with. I will report back tomorrow after I buy a pack.

I'd also pick up a new atomizer. It sounds like you may have snagged the coil that vaporizes the liquid. If so, your ecig just became a paper weight until the atty is replaced. Good luck.

Umm... the SE Gold isn't a "510 style" atomizer. It doesn't have a wick. YOu most like pulled the nichrome heating element out of the ceramic pot.... destroying the atomizer.
