Post How I got rid of my burnt atomizer taste

Well I was smoking my 510 and it got really hot. After that I had this really weird 'burned fish' taste. I was going to buy a new atomizer but I read somewhere to 'dry burn' the atomizer so I did it, but it didn't work. What I actually did was dry burn while dunking the atomizer in a cup of water, then shake out all the water, burn until coil is red and repeat several times.

After all that I did one last dry burn until the coil was red. I dripped some liquid into the atomizer and topped off a new cart and the bad taste is gone.

Looks like I won't have to get a new atomizer yet...

Default BURNT 510 ATTY TASTE...try this read

First...thank you so much to all who've put their posts up on this forum.
With your ingenious gadgetry, tweaking parts and expirementing, You've helped me go from a pck n a half a day to 1-2 cigs/ day....yesterday I had NO analog cig for the first time in 20 yrs...YAY ME

I started w/ an evo from innovapor on 8-9-09 , But 10 days later, had to purchase a joy510 for the manual switch as the auto batts drain due to loud music while at band practice.

THE BIGGEST DOWNER FOR THE AUTO BATT- no good for a guitar player w/ a Krank Rev amp that goes to 11

I have no camera to load pics, so this may be a bit txt heavy-SORRY

Now the crux...I had monster taste and vapr from my 510 for the first day or so-then kept getting the burnt taste etc...fought for two days to regain the original testicular fortitude of my new found fog machine..switching,carts,atts the typical hoops we jump through...LOL

I kept thinking it was an 510 att prob, cuz I NEVER got that taste from my EVO unless it was flooded- as most know, the respective atts do differ

After a closer inspection of one of my used 510 atts, i dug out w/ a dental hook, what i thought was stock cart material to discover it was actually BURNT nylon string...found the same thing in another used att that I thought was trash, but kept so I could take it apart to see how it works

FOR US NEW USERS...Look straight down the inside of the 510 att, youll see a white round ceramic ring, and the metal mesh...look close and youll see the string hanging out one or both sides from under the metal....Thats the culprit

Cleaned it all out of both of my used atts...and BAM My 510 had its BALLZ BACK....YAY

So I took the two unused 510 atts I have, dug out the string prior to priming,
And they both work great.-Digging out the string is WAY easier when the atts are un-used

The break-in was also MUCH quicker in addition to CONSISTENCY amongst the
four fully functional Atts I have

To be thorough b4 I made this post, I also tried All 4 atts using carts modded w/ t-bags coupled w/ the straw mod...and tried stock 510 carts...sure enough, BOTH carts put out MONSTER VAPOR and MONSTER taste- YAY!!!

A dental pick works GREAT for this fix- (the metal ones like our beloved dentists use)...you may need to bend a sharp hook in the tip

Dig in, grab the string -NOT THE MESH...give a light pull and the string comes out of one side making it reachable to pull out w/ tweezers or needle nose pliers,
W/ new atts, its a 30 sec affair- used ones take some tenacity to get all of the burnt string out

IMHO- the only "logical" purpose for the string in the 510 atts, would be to help prevent flooding and or draining into the batt connection?

BTW- dripping on the "stringless" atts...oh YA MAN...A must try

SORRY about the short novel LOL

Thank you for sharing this. I wasn;t sure what that was in there. I thought it was cart filler that got wrapped around the atty.

Yep that string/fibers have always had my suspicions, but I thought that it is crucial part of the wick that transfers the liquid to the coil?

So long as the metal bridge is in contact with the filler, or kept moist with liquid somehow, it will turn the liquid into vapor if the atty warms up to the proper temperature. Any extra fibers clinging onto or protruding from that metal bridge, I don't believe, are providing any assistance.

To give a quick test, you can take a dry atty, one that you've blown out, say, to change flavors. Drop a drop or two of liquid onto it, you can actually watch the bridge absorb the liquid. That's how I understand, that the atty works, as far as transferring the liquid.

it is , ripping them out will GREATLY shorten the life span of the atty.

    Hmm - now I'm torn.

I just tried this on an 801 atty (a BE112 from BesteCig) as a last resort, and it is the only thing that has worked in my quest to eliminate the horrid burnt taste that was plaguing my atomizer. Removing the little piece of string finally did the trick.

Of course, I'm now reading a few of you saying that removing this piece of string will trash my atty quickly. God, I hope you're wrong.

What does removing the string mess up? I'm wicking like a champ here without it...at least for now.

I ripped them out of one of mine, and it now floods in seconds, can't use it to vape with unless I want to spend 1 minute vaping and 30 minutes faffing. Never again will I try that!
