Do it your own way! You don't HAVE to DIY if that's not you. If you need higher nic strength, go for it. If you want to go all out and get a big ole PV, do it. If you are happy with one that looks like an analog, you do fine on a lower nic strength and like the DIY fruity stuff, go for it.
If it never leaves your mouth, so what. If you time your vapes, that's cool.
And if you change your mind and want to try it a different way, that's okay, too!
Whatever trips your trigger and gets you off analogs. There is no 'right' or 'wrong'.
(just how it works for me)

Hey, thanks for the tips, as someone who's just started I found some of the tips spot on. For a smoker who is trying ecigs the important thing is to replicate the experiences as closely as possible to make the transition smoother and give it a chance.

There are many things to adjust to so does't make sense to have too many variables at once, event the plastic feel of the filter can be a challenge for some. One can always experiment for instance with flavours and devices later. 36mg and going down is a good place to start, or if you have the resources then buy strengths right from 6mg to 36 to figure out what works for you. This totally depends on the individual and not necessarily how many cigs one smoked. But to buy for instance 6 or 18mg and finding the experience too light and inadequate is not a good start to ecigs.

Also I am finding some of the new devices are much more reliable than before so I would advice caution before buying tons of equipment. There are lots of conflicting views on atomiser cleaning, device models, mods so reading a bit before committing to any of these is a good idea.

IMO 24mgs would be a good starting point if your not sure... 36 is to high for most people...

Er, the OP posted that one should get 36mg, and 0mg, and cut the 36mg if you need to, since you can always lower the nicotine level by cutting it with more 0mg juice.

Myself, I was originally shocked that there are people out there that need 24mg. But hey, everyone is different. Some folk have been smoking longer than others. The OP was just trying to pass on a few tips that might save a bit of headache (and nic cravings) for newcomers.

Just my take on it, though. Obviously, do whatever's best for you. My juice is way higher than I need, and cut with VG and flavor to make it last longer - that's mainly a price thing, though. I go through it pretty fast.

I'll be very happy when I can wean myself off the nicotine altogether; I'll still vape, as I enjoy the experience (especially the flavors). I just won't have to deal with the side effects of *not* vaping.

Default here is what I do

I started on 14mg liquid from kingpin using a 510 with a personal charging case. I have had one battery this entire time and one atomizer, have killed neither. I bought the case, auto battery, atomizer, blank carts, and my first batches of eliquid all from kingpin. Their prices are great and they have free shipping. I am now smoking Johnson Creek tennesee cured 18mg RPG and it's my favorite, just ordered 30ml at 11mg as I am trying to taper down. I find the reduced PG from johnsons doesn't irritate my mouth and it's seriously yummy stuff. The only mod I made was to clean out the nasty fibers in my atomizer, works much better now and it's been several days of very regular smoking. I keep my charging case attached to my computer and just put the cig in there when I'm not using it to keep the battery charged. The case is always charging on the computer via USB. Then when I go anywhere I take a little plastic dropping bottle of liquid and a couple spare carts in my case. The case holds two spare carts with thier caps and you can store the atomizer with a cart in it, which I recommend. The case keeps the battery charged all day. I just store the whole thing in the case all the time. I also clean my case, battery, carts, wicks, and atomizer every couple of days with 91% alcohol, which is what I have around. I hear 100% is better, but haven't tried it. 91% works fine for me. I'm just using the standard wick thats comes in the carts. The importiant things with these seems to be regular cleaning, keeping things wet, and keeping things charged. We buy new blank carts in addition to cleaning and reusing carts once in a while. And always sample and order your eliquid before you run out. Unless you live in a cool city, you can't really just go down the street and buy more liquid. Also, I choose lower nic levels becasue I'm a one cig a day social smoker. Now of course I vape all day long becasue it's so much cleaner. I just get my buzz and take a break, no measuing here. I physically smoke way more than I used to, so I'm lowering my nic to 11 so I can keep the buzz and stay at a lower level. I've been cutting the 18 with a no nic sample of the JC original, but I love the tennesee flavor quite a bit. Hope this let's you know that we all do this a little bit differently. Find what works for you for equipment, liquid, and mods and enjoy it your way. I should also note that I just dropped my case with my cig in it in a glass of whisky on the rocks. It's ok, it appears to be fine. Tennesee cured indeed. Get some tweezers, some qtips and a metal or glass cup to clean things and a towel to dry things off. let the alcohol evaporate a bit before you start smoking right away. It doesn't take long to clean them at all for me, but I don't let stuff build up. Hope this helps someone out.

I wanted to clarify on the name of the post. I don't consider myself a veteran of vaping I have only been vaping a little over a year, but the name of the post was supposed to get the people who have been vaping for a while to post there advice. That is why at the end I put I hope the veterans will post there advice. The name of the post was not meant to say I was a veteran, but to get lots of good advice out there.

Puffing too hard will cause excessive juice to flow, flooding the atomizer, and getting juice in your mouth! And carts shouldn't leak, if they do they should be replaced. Replacement cartridges are advised from time to time at the filler will deteriorate from heat and clumsy re-filling. People sometimes want to experiment with "alternate" wick materials, sometimes will use things that could be harmful. And just for hygenic reasons. And if you use 'pre-filled' carts, there should be a plug or a seal on the end to keep the wicking (fiber-fill) moist. If you are re-filling, all you need is a small carry along bottle, one cartridge is all you need. And yes, if an atomizer sounds 'gurgly', take it off and blow it out from the thread end. Gurgling noises come from too much liquid in the atomizer, which can be caused by a fading battery, puffing too hard and not long enough, or over-filling the cartridge. Those things cut down the sufficient heating of the atomizer for good vapor production. But no reason to be alternating 5 atomizers, in the end they will all eventually fail no matter how you arrange their schedules!

And all should store juices, cartridges, and batteries safely, out of reach of kids and pets and curious old people!
Agreed 100% - I find that anything more than 10mg has me with my head in my clouds and a heart going boom diddy boom diddy boom.

definitely not me i can smoke 36mg fine it is about how much you are consuming. If you are vaping all day long non stop then you need a lower mg. With 36mg I will only take 2 or 3 drags an hour or less. Just a thought
