Overfilling is usually the culprit, but can be compounded by how thin the juice is, how well the stuffing is working (how well it is holding the liquid from just leaking out too quickly), and how deeply the atty presses into the stuffing (particularly with a fresh cart). It can also happen if the atomizer is flooded for whatever reason (excessive dripping, overfilled cart, poor stuffing, etc).

If you don't drip and only use cartridges, it is most likely to leak with a fresh cart installed, be it "factory" or freshly refilled by yourself. You may be able to minimize leakage by using your PV for a little while anytime you install a "fresh" cart before you put it down.
    Thank you for the reply.
I started to use it after refill and before put it in the box (a metallic cigar case by the way) just to test but there is always some juice in some place, well not always but most of the time. I'm sure I'm overfilling the cartridge but it's the only way I can get a good vapour from the dse901.

When you say 'minimize' do you mean that it will always leak? (even if I don't overfill) It's my 2º dse901 and it's the first time it happens.

    Hi residualgenius!
Thanks so much for the informative post. Just because you are new to this forum, doesn't make you new to vaping. You are a veteran compared to a lot of newbies out there. I have been vaping since March of this year, however, I just lurk in this and other forums and chime in when I feel like it.
Please don't take offense to people who just can't appreciate freely given suggestions/thoughts/advice/experience. Obviously vaping experience will vary from person to person. It really is all about trial and error. What will work for some, won't work for others. That is what this forum is about: Opinions/Research/etc.

Again, THANK YOU and Happy Vaping!

I've been vaping for about 2 months. Things I'd add to this thread:

0 mg, 36 mg - You'll need an empty bottle and dripper of some kind to be able to hold your 'mix' of the two, and you'll want to mix very small batches to decide the 'right' level of nic for you. If you're not comfortable with that, just get 1 bottle of high, medium or low juice based on being a heavy/medium/light smoker. Don't buy the 36 if you aren't prepared to dilute it.

Buy a few sample flavors in small bottles preferably from a supplier with free shipping to minimize the cost and let you experiment. Today I finally threw out two samples that I actively disliked after trying many times to doctor them up to something acceptable, and I now have too many great flavors to bother with these two anymore.

As soon as I started posting here I got a lot of responses telling me I HAD to get a manual battery/USB passthru/battery mod. It was a few weeks until I got a manual battery for my 901- they weren't easily available, then tried a manual passthru, and finally wallplugs and a USB charger for my car to be able to use the passthrus all over my house and in my car. Having burned through a lot of auto batts by overfillng my carts I'm now sold on manual. If you can find a starter kit with manual batteries go for it.

Check out the "rho Mod" version of the Lipton PTB cart mod. It vapes way longer and keeps the liquid out of your battery. After trying this the stock material seems useless. It's even better when you remove the PTB and fill the cart, lasts a long time compared to polyfill. Seems to make the smokes per cart more realistic.

Many Thanks goes out to the original poster.
You have given some sound advice.

I am brand new and have been Vaping for a whopping 2 days and wish I had read the advice before hand.

Buying a "0 mg" e-liquid to cut whatever strength you buy is a good idea. At this point I have Tennessee Cured 24mg from Johnson creek. Ultimately, I want to cut down my nicotine addiction but for the immediate transition a stronger dosage gives me confidence in this alternative delivery method.

Being that I am new I will refrain from giving advice and will only discuss my current experience with vaping. I have bought the Fifty One Trio and have found the carts are prone to leaking which has not been a pleasant experience. I have found that direct dripping while using the original cap/empty cart without a liquid reservoir that came on the atomizer eliminates this problem. Being the battery is automatic I drip only two drops as I do not want the liquid to leak into the switch.

I hope my Titan 510 with a manual battery will be an improvement to the Fifty One Trio. It will be nice if the leaking problem will be lessoned with my new purchase which is currently in the mail. For now I will continue to direct drip until it arrives.

What tips and tricks would the Veterans suggest in reducing leakage?
What products do you feel are the best for preventing leakage?

residualgenius, Thanks you so much for posting this thread. It was precisely what I was looking for and I wish I had read it sooner. I’ve read the rebuke from others on the 36mg and I feel that the people refuting this advice do not understand what you where trying to convey to us novices. Perhaps more emphasis could have been given to the 0mg purchase.

People, all residualgenius is saying here is that everyone is addicted at different levels. Buy purchasing a 0mg bottle along with a 36mg you will have full control over the level of nicotine that is delivered. If you start with one part 0mg and one part 36mg you end up with 18mg… if it is too much or too little you can adjust accordingly. Also, taking a hit at 36mg will give someone new to Vaping the confidence that they will be able to get nicotine into there system regardless of how addicted you are. If they start out with too little they may lose confidence and move back to regular cigarettes.

In the event that I find myself in the position of giving a new e-Cig user advice I will for sure advise them to purchase a bottle of 0mg along with the high 36mg concentration. I will also advise them not to vape at full strength.

Thanks again for this post as it has been very useful.
And my advice to you residualgenius is too not let people’s criticism get to you. Many people are addicted to picking things apart and it is just a part of there nature. Your advice is good and I am grateful that you posted it.

    Robert,

Leaking - don't over-fill your cartridges. You want to drip into the cart until you see that the top is wet, but not pooling. You might have to wait a couple seconds between each of the last couple drops. Tapping the cart helps get the liquid down, as does squeezing the cart, or inserting a paper clip and pushing the cart filler aside (which lets the liquid drain to the bottom when filling). You may just want to stop filling early, and/or dab the top of the cart with a kleenex to get off any excess. Filling takes a little experience, so you'll have much less problem in a week or two.

Cutting, or mixing 36mg with 0mg. This is a great idea, but note that this can cut the flavor unless both the 36mg and 0mg are the same flavor, which makes things quite expensive. If it works for you, that's excellent. You'll soon realize what strength you should be buying so you don't have to worry about cutting. Make your next two flavors 24mg and 16mg (or 16 and 11) - this will allow you to change flavors from time to time, which helps the taste a lot. You will start getting used to a flavor, so it will seem reduced after a while. Switching flavors periodically helps keep them "fresh" tasting. And having different nic strengths around is good, since it lets you pick the strength when you want it. I like to wake up to a strong nic-juice, then I vape the mild stuff all day. Some people switch to 6mg or even 0mg before bed.

Thats how I understood it....sometimes you can learn ALOT and troubleshoot and fix alot of problems in a short time. I've only been vaping since August 11th and my little 901 in combination with some of the mods I found here in this forum have made me pretty smart when it comes to 901's. I get awesome amounts of vapor and great throat hits with nice clean taste with my juice. My attys last long enough to make me happy and I have enough batteries and chargers so that I never run out of power. So whatever you want to call me, be it a "veteran" or whatever.....I could give some accurate advice about 901's. Its a learning curve and how long you've been doing it is irrevelant....Its how many issues you have had and successfully figured out how to fix is how you learn to be an "experienced" vaper.
Everyone has different experiences and alot of people dont care for the 901 but I LOVE it and I tried an 801 as well but I can get what I enjoy from my little beast LOL

Yes, there are some other triggers associated with smoking which is one of the things that makes it so doubly hard to quit, but the bottom line is that it's the nicotine that we are addicted to physically. It only makes sense to stay away from the higher nicotine levels as we are having such great success with staying away from tobacco cigarettes. The idea that anyone would NEED that high of a nicotine level when trying to get away from smoking is just ludicrous. I can't wait for the day I am buying or mixing my juice with next to nothing in nicotine content. That's when I will know that I have beaten the habit.

Cure the ADDICTION, don't just treat the CRAVINGS.

I loved smoking but It got soooo expensive and I hated the smelly nasty ashtray smell that stayed on my clothes and In my hair. Plus all the thousands of other chemical they add to analogs made me try vaping. I use high nic juice because I didnt do this to quit...I did it to substitute with something a little healthier. My lungs are nice and clear, I dont get out of breath and I havent gotten bronchitis yet this year and when the temperature drops in the fall I have always gotten it. So my point is that there are more people that vape for other reasons than to quit nicotine.....more than 1%

Im kinda new to this whole thing, but I love it!
My buddy and I split half on a Pure Smoke, and we want to try and get another one, maybe more of a tobacco flavor to it. Did I mention I am cheap? Any ideas out there?
I remember the first one we tried was a Smoking Everywhere, and it did the job really well from what I remember, but my memory might be askiew since we were pretty drunk playing pool at the bars sooo...

Anyone out there have any ideas on which one is the best to buy to have it taste the most like a real smoke? Thanks all!
