Messy, messy, messy...
I've had that happen, too ... But only when I've let it get too dry.

Don't forget the straw

The truth is you can use many different things as a filler.... Best to make sure it's pure & clean however... You can find polyfil at your local wal-mart craft section or almost any other craft store. It's ok to use this stuff just make sure you keep your cartridge full of fluid and use a new one regularly.. If you let it dry out the poly hairs will burn. And you'll be smoking polyester which wouldn't be a good thing & not to mention it has a bad taste. People tend to use too much polyfil for their first time... it's best to use little as possible just enough so the fluid won't leak out... which will depend on the viscosity of your liquid. Many people also use pyramid teabags etc.

Without some details a statement like this is meaningless. There are so many different variables involved. If we all used the exact same PV and the exact same juice... maybe. But as it stands 'one size does not fit all'.

The blue foam (not fluval) fish aquarium filters from the pet store "Marineland Rite Size U" seem to work great for me. There is no stringy crap burning up in the atty like the fluval or factory carts. It has a nice wick and texture and seem to be reusable. I have noticed it works best with VG since it's thicker. (doesn't leak) I'm sure different size foam may work as well. I'm glad Eclypse posted the topic about the blue foam because I was tired of opening up my cart to see that I had been smoking strings of polyfill all caught up in the atty. Fluval Looks Just as stringy as the poly.
If you decide to use the Foam remember to wash it first with soap and hot water and rinse well.

Here's another foam product with a different density recommended (no long term opinion yet) by a member.

I got blue foam at petsmart. Need to use the straw mod with it. Takes a little playing with it to get the right amount so it's not leaking into the atty.

I'm actually looking at the Buff Puff scrubbing pad (the generic equivalent from Walgreens)..... and I'm willing to bet that if you orient it correctly (it has a grain structure) it is going to work quite well as a standard cart filler. Reports are that it already works exceptionally well as a "plug".
I'm going to try it on some carts that I have that don't lend themselves readily to springs, straws, and other such stuff.

Sure! Go to the near-end of this thread:
Reservoir Straw & Plug Mod (RSP Mod)
This entire mod works unbelievably well (I am using a hybrid of it in my 901 carts on my 510... vertical spring with either the blue pad (mass-produced with a 5/16" hole punch) or the Buff Puff). I just started using the Buff-Puff, but Kristin has been using it for days.
I don't like working with it as much as the blue pad... but from a functionality standpoint I can see why she likes it so much. It does work quite, quite well.
The pad itself is pretty amazing. It has this grain structure where it only compresses easily along one axis. I think this is going to make it a great traditional filler. I'm getting ready to put it in my wife's 901 with the traditional "straw mod". She isn't the type to dork with a cartridge plug... so she needs something that she can just drip into for a refill.
