I'm not sure they can legally take it from you either. When it comes time for me to get on a plane and fly cross country I'll just take it in the bathroom and smoke it in there. Who will ever know.
I know that vapor is not smoke but I don't know if vapor will set off a smoke detector in an airline bathroom. I do know that the flight crew takes a very dim view of people who "smoke" in the bathroom.

If I were on a flight, I wouldn't ask for permission but I might tell the person next to me

You can cuff the e-cig up your sleeve and blow the smoke down your shirt, no one would smell it or see it

Inhale, but don't exhale. Problem solved.

There was a great post by Steve at PS..on this thread about airport security and vaping in the airplane..
and one should not vape in the bathroom unless you vape blowing out downwards direction (into the toilet) otherwise it will set the detector off..!!

We should get a really smart person to write a informative letter to various airline companies.

I just flew U.S.Air also. I asked a FL. on the ground is they allowed e-cigs. She looked VERY puzzled and then said 'no, do you want to read the regs.' Didn't have the time and wasn't in the mood for an arguement so I passed. First fligh was at night. Pretty dark cabin. I just pointed the air nozzle at myself ,cupped the led, and had no problems. Second flight was daytime. Did the same but was much more careful and took lighter hits.

I could have done it descreetly, but I thought I remember some posts on here about them being okay on planes. FAs and pilots using them.

I guess I wanted to just be upfront with it and that's why I called it a PV. I guess I wanted to know what their reaction would be when I first asked while boarding. I was happy to see the FA was very casual with it and said "sure".

I did ask the person beside me (there were only two seats on our side) out of courtesy. But the second FA just went balistic!!

I guess I thought if I was upfront and casual with it, I would get an okay reaction. I really didn't want to be hiding with it, like some outlaw, and I didn't want to have to sneak around, like I'm doing something shameful. That's what analogs are for.

Anyway, it was quite a scene! Just wanted to give you all a heads up.

This story reminds me of that scene in "Meet the Parents"!
