You may find this was called Clan.
I once tried using it as a roll up tobacco. Heck of an aftertaste....

Hi Pete
I remember Clan - tartan packet right?
The one I mean was way before then, it was around 1950 that I first remember smelling it, until then all pipe tobaccos smelled to me like smoldering camel sh.......... , er excreta.
I was asking my older sister about it a few weeks ago, she also remembers the great aroma but can't name it - said it was called something like 'Sweet Briar' or similar.
That name didn't ring any bells with me, although the name was a double word, not 'Passing Cloud' but something similar.
I can only describe the smell as flowery, Rich and sweet - smelt like the countryside in Spring and there was not another tobacco that smelt anything like it.
Does anyone have a clue?
Barry
PS - I never actually smoked it - I was only about 8 years old when I first smelt it.
I smelt it for years after, in the markets, shops and often in the street - then it just faded away, probably about 25 years or so ago.

Well prize or not it is interesting to recall those days - I used to smoke Clan in my long-stemmed porcelain pipe.

British Pipes - The Pipe Collector
has an article on British pipes - can't vouch for the sociological comments. The website's home page also has links to Compton's tobacco and some vintage tins of tobacco, 4 Square and so on.
I guess one could Google for vintage tobacco and it might bring up that elusive name.

BT, DT, GTTS, but thanks for trying............
I recently spent a couple of days on the internet, Googling, asking on Pipe smokers forums, etc. - no joy........
I'm begining to think that this secret is lost in the mists of time forever (or for 28 days, whichever is least)
The only additional information I can give is that it was a pretty rare, maybe expensive tobacco, I'd guess that less than 5% or so of pipe smokers used it.
Cheers
Barry
PS - many apologies to Tom for so thoroughly hijacking this thread.
