those darn streetlights...bah! it was a wonderful time but we had some not-so-fun things...cold war, learning 5 different siren alerts, thunder storms that resembled air raids in the dead of night, McCarthy and House Unamerican Activities (did I remember that correctly?)...<shudder> but, it was still the "best of times."

I was born in 1955 and grew up on the outskirts of Decatur, Illinois. I remember being able to do pretty much anything as long as I wasn't causing any monetary damage. I would ride my bike out on the airport runway until the control tower guy yelled at me to get off it as a plane was coming in. After it would land, he would say, okay - you can go back out now. And oh how I loved our family Fourth of July parties, what with making home made ice cream and cutting off big slices of watermelon for seed spitting contests. Yeah, the cold war and all that was going on, but that was a different, far-removed world in my mind. There was too much fishing, hunting, and baseball going on to worry about that stuff.

OMG...we had a BAD storm yesterday afternoon it went into the night while I did this too → ← yup dat. Kept waking me up with the LOUD thunder boomers too so, I gots up late this morning Hope you all have a wonder Sunday, or Monday dependin iffin ya in dem other countries
Sure is lots ta check up on here today ! Readin the forum I mean. I have tons of laundry I gotta get done since I couldn't hang the clothes outside yesterday. And dat maid is still havin her affair wit da pool boy she ain't come back yet !!

I think my mom still has the canned goods she bought during the cuban missile crisis -- we may be attacked at any moment but by golly we'll have Ranch Style Beans :-) And how is duck and cover under your school desk supposed to save you from a nuclear bomb ?

yep, sometimes it was tough being from Dallas back then. Some yankee newspaper even had the headlines after the next cowboys game of something like some team "beat by Assassins"
