    Default Confused About Newsletter info

Ok, I am totally confused now. This week the newletter had the following sentence:
"Cleaning your batteries once per week will help extend their life, as will using your battery until it is fully drained of charge."
I am almost totally certain that information is the exact opposite of what I have heard Morandir say about a bazillion times. And it is the total opposite of what I do. I recharge the battery before it flashes - which I though was the whole deep cycling thing. I am sorry to have to ask (again) - what exactly do I need to be doing with my batteries?

    Ms Kimberly,

There are a few threads over on the vapor4life company form on this as well. Please allow me to summarize and hopefully this can end here reasonably quickly.

Yes, that single sentence in the newsletter has caused a discussion since it is clearly in contrast with Mr Morandir's detailed test results, not to mention those performed in the battery industry itself by the manufacturers, without regard to ecigs or any particular device that uses them... There has also historically been confusion on this matter because that statement was true for older battery chemistries such as Ni-Cad, which had such issues.

While it isn't a battle, and I didn't mean to make it out to be, most of us seem to generally agree and understand (or can research and verify independently if they choose) that deep cycling is proven to reduce the number of charge cycles you can get from a given battery of this chemistry.

At the same time, the opinion was expressed that the # of cycles you would "lose" by deep cycling may or may not be worth the hassle of swapping batteries in and out of the charger more often in order to avoid it, prorated over the cost of the battery and its lifetime, are significant to some and not to others.

So, whether to 'worry' about deep cycling is a matter of personal opinion, while the issue of it happening is a matter of proven fact.

Is any of this a big deal? Not at all! Just a little confusion, bound to happen now and then...

I'm afraid to add this, but there IS one thing I still wonder about it all:

If you have to stop using a battery early to avoid deep cycling, you will get to use it less minutes per use (since you're stopping early), but get more overall uses.

If you deep-cycle it each time, you will get more minutes per use, but less overall uses.

If you multiple actual minutes of use by the number of cycles (uses) in each case, is there a clear (and by clear I mean significant) winner?

I was wondering this myself when I saw the newsletter. Good summary Blue. Sounds like it pretty much evens out. Not something to really hassle yourself with much.

BlueAdept sir just so happen to have the answer....

In one tezst I showed by stopping 9 minutes earlier than you normally would when using a battery, got 71 more charges out of it (redoing this test with the slim line charger only, so it's not entirely up to date, this was done before their release). Will use the avg test run time as an example (your battery can last longer or shorter depending how you vape, personally killed a shorty king diamond in under 30 minutes with non-stop vaping. Have touched up on actual run time vs. use time before, if needed will clarify it again here at request). 127 minutes is the average test run time using a king diamond auto shorty to the blink in these tests, so around 118 minutes or so would stop. So doing the math we get-

Without deep cycling- 318 charges at 118 minutes of actual use time= 37524 minutes of combined actual use time
With deep cycling- 247 charges at 127 minutes of actual use time= 31369 minutes of combined actual use time

Again those comparisons are dated, using only the slim line charger and not deep cycling have seen numbers of 400+ charges out of a single battery. That test is in it's very early infant stages though.

Morandir, thanking you in advance for your work! Can't wait to see what your testing shows.

Wow, so if I read that right, a spread of about 6000 minutes, which divides into 100 hours difference. For someone like me, that might be an extra week or so of usage.

Thanks, Mr Morandir! I look forward to more data as you continue the experiments.
