I had a friend die of uncontrolled diabetes back in the 70's. She tried but back then so many Doctors treated it as YOUR problem. They said when the pills didn't work it was because you didn't follow orders.

She was never even told to test or do insulin. She went into shock and died.

I am glad I didn't have to do the big needles because I wouldn't have done it. You guys who paved the way for us are my hero's. Thank you for posting and putting my petty problems in perpective.

Note! I was not being sarcastic! After reading this board I am thankful my biggest problem is dealing with testing and little tiny needles.

Why wouldn't I know who you are? You post in here and Women's as well as the board. I am not senile..cenile..old.

O.K. I figured it out..Borg Queen! I blew your cover in public! LOL What I wanna know is how you reduced all those tubes down to one insulin pump as your 'cover".
    Resistance is futile!

    I am cennile..

    Hi MaryKay,

    Nah... You're not cenile....

That's really sad about your friend.. Back in the 1970's, it was difficult because the only way to test your sugar what the test tape, diasticks, or ketodiastics, and the tiny tablets to test for ketones if you used diasticks that was all using your urine. Other than that, was this one pill that you popped into a test tube with urine, but the tubes got really hot and after a bit would bust... Unless you went for fastings at the hospital or were admitted and had your blood sugar taken, you just couldn't test...

To be honest with you, I'm not a fan of those pills... You would need to be so stringent with your diet, that you would feel that you were locked up... The other problem is that you need to test your blood sugar at least 6-8 times a day using them (Dang I do that on the pump too)... Everyone's metabolism is differant and with the pills, depending upon your metabolism, would depend on when and how many pills or the miligrams you'd need.. I would just laugh at a doctor when they suggest to take the pills, and then just go on insulin.. It's easier in the long run....

You use connectors for each tube with a splitter attachment, to connect the tubing and end up with one tube visible, then you hide all of it under your t-shirt *LOL*

Oh! And we weren't heros, we were guinnia pigs *LOL*

Well I had a duh! moment. I was doing my testing and came up with a reading of 287..what! Then I did another reading 6 hours after a meal of salad and fruit (very small bowl) and it read 395!! I went nuts, I checked my needles, the strips I rewashed my hands and applied my cleaner, then did it again. 397!
I took my insulin and tested again this morning 245..ok something is very very wrong. It wasn't til I had a talk with Angels luv, that I decided to dismantle my meter..sure enough a little drop of blood was on the screen. Tested and got a reading of 117. Whew! now where is my B.P. med?
It always the simple things that get you.

All's well that end's well.. I didn't do anything.. I just should have told MaryKay to check for a drop of blood on her meter and it would have helped *LOL*

Well Drat! Another glitch! I tested at 60 yesterday morning and 40 this morning! Now what? I was rushed out of bed to take mom to an appt. she "forgot" to mention. when we got back at 12pm, I had time to test..I was kind of dizzy and a bit sick but chalked it up to no breakfast and no coffee and driving (I get car sick at the drop of a hat, inner ear is just weird). I saw the 40 and thought well great, we could have had a wreck!
It's back at 109 now. I am not getting up at 3am to eat. lol

Mary Kay, if you are having morning lows you might try a piece of something high fiber before bed, a fiber one bar or a low carb, high fiber piece of toast. It really helped with mine.

DiJohn, You are so right! I normally eat a whole grain slice of bread with breakfast. It has lots of crunchies in it. Sometimes as a treat I have the breakfast bread with raisins and nuts.
But Mom was running late for her appt. and I just threw on clothes and brushed my teeth and hair. had i tested first, I would have taken a slice with me along with some juice. I wonder why after years of high levels I am getting super low levels..
I have been testing in the 100 to 140 range for the whole month.

How long since you've had you A1c checked? That is the best way to tell how in control your sugar is. My ex and his son were both diabetic and we had to deal with stuff daily because of my ex. He was terrible with his diet. He would eat a whole box of Little Debbies, then wonder why he needed extra insulin. In the 5 years that I was with him, his A1c was never below a 12.

How are you feeling with the lower numbers? Are you using the Insulin pen or do you have to use the vials and mix it? If I'm being to nosey just tell me!

MaryKay, can you use glucose tablets when you dip too low? I'm type 2 on Metformin. My A1C was 7.8 at it's highest, which isn't too bad, but it was steadily going up, up, up. I think my highest sugar test was 140 something. I started on low carb last year and my weight and A1C dropped steadily and my readings were below 100. Last checkup A1C was 5.25. My sister is insulin dependent and had readings in the 500's. She went on a low carb diet and was able to get off insulin. Has anyone else had any experience with low carb?

For the three months that I could get my very morbidly obese ex to do the Atkins diet he was able to get off insulin and only took one glucophage a day. Once he went off the diet he went right back to his old eating habits. Sadly he is now so overweight that he cannot walk and is in an assisted living facility at the age age of 50.
