What a great thread! OK I have a possum story and a gopher one. The possum one...Living in the SF Bay Area and had three cats. I always put their big covered litter tray on the back patio after cleaning just to get it outside. One evening as I was getting the cats in I tried to pick up the litter box and it was so heavy!! I looked inside and there was a huge possum in it! I screamed, dropped the box and my whole family[including the 3 cat] watched from the glass window as it slowly ambled away.Damn they are weird lookn!
Same house, same 3 cats a few months later...I'm alone getting ready to head out to run some errands and I decide to make a bathroom stop. I'm sittin there on the pot when a fugly gopher starts shuffling his way towards me! I freak out and grab the toilet brush and push it out the front door, eww that was another creepy critter with it's big ol long yellow teeth,,,I look over to the sliding glass door and there were my three cats looking at me and I could swear they were laughing!
Damn I also had racoons in my kitchen once eating the cat food, just remembered that one![]()
Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.
You have more critters then me! We used to have a giant black snake living out back..he ate the mice and rats that tried to invade the chicken coop. My neighbor killed him when he went in her yard! I was really sorry about losing him.
Ugh possums... I hate them - we have a real problem here. My siberian husky just loves to get those possums. We have to keep a wooden baseball bat by the door - the possums sit on our fence and taunt our dogs. We use the bat to knock them off the fence, we don't do it to be mean... my sibe is epileptic and I am so afraid he will get overly excited by one of those buggers and seize.
A couple of years ago my sibe got one, it's side was ripped out we were positive it was dead. We worked for about 30 minutes to get him away from it so hubby could get rid of it. We finally got the dog inside, hubby headed towards the garbage can with the old possum on the shovel. Just as he opened the lid to the can the possum jumped up over his arm and ran into the neighbors yard - hubby jumped about 20 feet LMAO.
You had me laughin' MK - but Mike needs to "man up" - possum tossin' is men's work
We had what we thought was "a" possum under our wood rack - my son kept putting things to block the areas around the fence where this disgusting creature could squeeze under - finally it was gone- then my son saw a bunch of little eyes under the wood rack - OMG - you shut mamma off from her babies! thank God they'd been weaned- she did not return and her babies meandered off.
Now we live in Philadelphia- why do we have possum?
I had called the City - the lady said "we don't do possum"...I said, but you have possum! - She said we can send out a live trap - I said who in their right mind would pick up that trap after a possum of all things was in it? - no response from the City.
One of my dogs showed me about possum's playing possum too. He caught one in the front yard. I thought it was dead and went to get a box to pick it up in (you're braver than me MK, I wasn't going to touch it). Of course it was gone when I came back. (insert face palm- playing possum duh).
BUT, a day or so later, the dog caught it again. They are none too bright (possums I mean, though sometimes I wonder about the dog) . It looked dead again. I got this one into the box, and I started to wonder if maybe it wasn't really dead. Then I looked in the box, and it way laying there all limp and dead looking...but also peaking out of one very slightly open eye.
I doubt brave.More of a dingbat move to be sure! . just wanted to get it away from the dog..not sure if I was worried about the possum or the dog! Both of them have big teeth!
I kind of think possums are cute..they are what they are..I just don't think I want one a as a pet!![]()
