With the snow, I made chili

We also have this ritual at dinner, got the idea from a movie and changed it to fit us, we have the question of the day! Course there are rules to the question of the day, it cant be something negative, should not be something asked before, and you have to explain why you answered the way you did. We dont allow heavy serious talk at dinner, like no politics lol I want dinner to be relaxing and enjoyable, which is how the "question of the day" came about. Its really quite interesting and you can learn things about your family this way hehe!
When we get close to holidays its generally aimed towards them like "what was your favorite xmas and why?" everyday ones we have had "if you could be a super hero what would your powers be and why?" "what animal would you be and why?" We take turns making up questions so everyone is involved.

I've only dropped into to this thread...now I know why I've avoided it. It makes me HUNGRY!!! I don't cook much, especially since it's just me. But reading about chicken and dumplings...mmmm...can't wait for it to cool off here in Florida. I just can't eat "cold weather food" when it's hot outside.

My mom always made rolled dumplings. So did my sister. Then she discovered the frozen ones (Mrs. Reames, I think) and quit making them since she thought the frozen ones were almost as good. Mom had 4 recipes using the dumplings: chicken & dumplings, bean soup, potato soup (but she cut the dough as noodles), and the BEST EVER dessert, cherry dumplings! A little milk or ice cream on the cherry dumplings and you're in 7th Heaven.

I think the family time is the best you can do for kids. Sundays were quiet days after church we would play a board game while my mom made a larger meal. One that would be the bases for the rest of the week for left overs.. So while that was cooking we would play a board game.. My Dad got so much pleasure out of beating us kids.. Will never forget his excitment in monoply of Marvin Gardens !!! (that's mine!!!!!) with 1 hotel on it will cost you lol lol lol.. And just to keep us in the game so he could toture us longer he would make loan shark deals with us if we landed on his hotel properties that lined an entire side of the board.....praying when we came to that side of the board we would roll the dice big enough to escape landing on his properties... lol lol lol... seeing my Dad grin and laugh so big and loud was worth it lol lol.. Kimer think it's wonderful you have found a way to just spend simple time together...

Our Favorite Sunday dinners was when we sat around our coffee table (big one) and had dinner while we watched Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew (the kids were preteen then). We always has a great evening with a big meal and dessert. The kids still remember it.
Normal dinners alway included a what did you learn today question. Sometimes the answers were very funny!

MaryKay, that reminded me of Sunday evenings. Mom had fixed the Sunday dinner around noon time. For the evening, she'd fix something light like grilled cheese sandwiches and we'd eat in the LIVING ROOM, watching Disney. I loved Sunday nights, lol.

Oh Patricia! LMAO as I read this- (This is our family!) We are Monopoly collectors- I have about 17 different board games (we only play 4 of them) And just recently we have purchased Monopoly for the Wii- Oh my Goodness! My husband is the loan shark... LMAO- But my older kids have been playing now for ... well, years- They are now as cut throat as he is- LOL I used to play all the time too, now I like to watch more but if I play it is me and hubby against each other and the kids are filler- LOL So, I tend to stay out so they can enjoy!
My husband likes the cheapest 2 props on the board- while everyone else is trying to get the elite, he builds them up and gets em every time! (He does end up usually also w/ all transportations and a few other things he may use as trades for bribery to get another monopoly or two... LMAO
This just not only brings back memories... (Heck! He is playing against the computer right now on the Wii, waiting for the kids) It is exactly what we do- Only not just Sundays... We have family game night- then we have our lazy days, and then when I get to where I want all TV's and computers off... (and they have to play the analog Monopoly... LOL "analog")- Thx for touching on this- It's nice to know we aren't the only ones! LOL
For dinner... Haven't decided yet tonight- Maybe Taco salad... I want something filling but quick and NO Fast Food/ Heat Up/ Or PIZZA...
    LOL

We stayed out a bit too late last night, so I knew that after working a full day today I wasn't going to feel like doing much cooking. We are trying to save up some money and cut out as much fast food as possible, so I am just going with a quick and easy tuna casserole.

Hey I threw together a nummy something tonight, but out of respect for the woman's forum I will send it to you.

    Shredded acorn and butternut squash.

Shredded squash, tossed in olive oil and spices, broiled for 20 minutes or so.

Topped with fresh grated parm, served with diced tomato, sour cream and bacon.
