Just because something chemically reacts with plastic doesn't mean it's not safe for human consumption (and the reverse is true: the fact that something doesn't react with plastic doesn't mean it IS safe). For example, hydrofluoric acid doesn't react with HDPE plastic but will dissolve glass...
