I've been pretty successful at the recoiling/rewicking. I use 32 Kanthal and 100% cotton yarn (white), boiled for 15 minutes, rinsed and air dried. My ohms come out in the neighborhood of 2.4 to 2.6. I used this youtube video (it works for the Evod and Protank, too):
