I take it they aren't just for looks? Pressing the fire button is not comfortable.

bang on. the button cover is dual purpose - they look super-fabulous and are easier on the ol' thumb
I never used my reo without one untill today and honestly the regular button is extremely uncomfortable compared to others but the button cover makes it one of the nicest feeling buttons

This is the reason I sold my REO years ago... two months after I sold it someone started selling the "button covers"... Go figure.
I also love the covers. If you have a 1ml syringe you can take the black rubber end off the plunger and use that to help you until you get a cover. I used this for a long time and it really does stay on and helps. Good luck to you.
Y'know, as a side effect of smoking, I developed one hella callus on my thumb from striking the lighter. When I first got a reo, I didn't feel any pain in my firing thumb, but over time, it became more and more sensitive as the callus went away.
I got a button cover to alleviate the discomfort, smiling to myself as I ordered it, knowing that I had left another vestige of smoking behind.

I assume it doesn't matter which button cover I order? Black would look best with my reo (black wrinkle and copper vein). But would metal hold up better than derlin?
I'd like to know that too...I wound up switching to a black door on my black wrinkle cause the copper vein door on the hammertone looks outstanding. now my black wrinkle looks goofy with the copper button, but black would make it look like the ninja that it is.
The brass will develop a patina over time if you don't keep it polished. I don't think durability is a factor. I can't imagine wearing a cover of any type out.

Dunno. The regular nekkid buttons never bothered me either. Youse guys doing some real serious button mashing here?
It's a button - not a bottle opener. Either one would be fine. (Well maybe unless you drop things a lot. Then maybe metal would be the better choice.)
