Yes folks I have done the impossible. I have quit nicotine in it's entirety and it has almost been two weeks. I have used nicotine offf and on regularly since I was 16 (I am 33 now). On May 22 I had my last vape. At this time I was constantly hitting on my PV at 12mg nicotine. Here's how it all happened:

I just became a registered nurse and am currently looking for a job. For some reason here in Ohio there are very few nursing jobs to be had and almost all the hospitals I am applying at are saying that they will not hire nicotine users period. This includes gum, patches, etc. So I started freaking out. I thought about going nic free and still vaping but then I got a burr up my .... and decided to see how long I could go without vaping. I put my KGo away and forged ahead.

Now I'll admit the first 48 hours weren't the easiest but it was no way as hard as when I had gone cold turkey with cigarettes. Not even close. There was a decent urge that there was something missing and that I wanted to do but it wasn't a craving that I couldn't distract myself from. With the help of smart phone games such as words with friends and soduku I was able to distract myself when the cravings hit. The weirdest thing was waking up for the first few nights in the middle of the night with cravings but I didn't give in. I did chew a lot of gum to keep my mouth occupied...I found cinnamon flavor works the best. I say the first 48 hours were the worst and after I made it though that time the cravings disappeared almost entirely and while I still have the automatic reflex of reaching for my PV the wanting to vape goes away quickly and I almost never even think about it. I gave my vaping supplies to my boyfriend who still vapes and I have no problem being around. It's not like when you quit smoking and are around smokers and you want to rip the cigarette out of their hand. The only time I thought of vaping when I am around him is when he asks me to fetch him a new battery and I am reminded of what a pain the ... it really is (still better than smoking though).

I am so greatful for the e-cig to get me to quit smoking I am even more greatful that it allowed me to go nicotine free by not putting any extra addictive ingrediants in the juice to make it almost impossible to quit. I am so glad I started vaping as I would still be smoking today.

Now the physical: While my breathing improved dramatically after I quit smoking I can tell my breathing is even better after quitting vaping. One thing I have noticed is that the ball of phlegm I had in the back of my throat when I vaped is no longer there and my stamina for physical activity is vastly improving still. I can definitely tell a change for the better.

Well that's my story. Thanks to all my fellow ECF'ers who have been with me on this journey. I'll still be around. :)

Congrats on becoming an RN and going Nic free/ vape free Zara!

I'm kind of like you, I started smoking just before my 16th birthday, am 33 now, and have to switch to zero Nic (doctors orders for fusion surgery though).

Do you have any 0 Nic on hand in case you do get an odd craving? It might not be a bad idea to have a bottle of it available, or DIY supplies to make some just in case (I like to be prepared for any scenario, especially when it confess to something that keeps me from smoking!). You might never use it (and that would be awesome!), but it could keep you Nic free, too (I'm thinking of all the times I was 'quit', and then went out with friends to see live bands, have a few drinks, or just the normal curve balls life sometimes throws, and found myself with a cig in hand - a PV with 0 Nic would have done the trick instead, and since there its no Nic, you can put it back down with no ill effect.

Just a thought, and Congrats again!

I got to 0% nic now also but unlike you I can't put my Echo with my smoke/black licorice DIY down. Holding a cigar constantly in the corner of my mouth, was an addiction all to itself. Wish I could go full no vape myself, but after answereing all the questions about my disapearing cigars, I hate to think of every one I again have to explain where Echo's went.

Great job. Come here. Its a retirement community and they need people in the medical field so bad that they pay for people to go to school for it. The pay is low, as is any job around here but people come here get exp and leave where pay is better. We lost the best pediatrician within 4 hours of here last year and played hell trying to find another one that knew a .... from a hole in the ground. The last DR the kids seen was no help. Both kids ended up in emergency the same night back to back days. The DR was so stupid he didn't even know the kids had strep throat & bronchitis.

Congrats on quitting, but I think that the policy that those hospitals are taking is a horrible one, with a very slippery slope. Looks like some states have laws to protect smokers, but Ohio isn't one of them. Although I don't agree with it, I can at least see the reasoning about not hiring smokers. But people who use e-cigs and NRT's, which are not proven to have any significant health risks, should not be included. Here's an article about the hiring ban and it lists the states that protect the rights of smokers.

Thanks everyone.

No I didn't keep any Zero nic juice around the house. I gave it all to my boyfriend which I only live with on the weekends (until I get that rare nursing job). I don't even have a PV around. So far I haven't had more than a slight minor craving that passes quickly.

I'm going to see the Chili Peppers tomorrow in Columbus with my friend who is smoker (and with two friends who aren't) so that might be the most trying time so far

Yeah the anti-Nicotine laws are really stupid but with the job market the way it is where there are more workers than jobs they can afford to be picky. Hell the new Casino in Columbus is hiring but they are refusing to hire nicotine users either which I find odd given the nature of that industry.

Thanks again for the encouragement.

Oh Zara, I am so envious that you get to see the Chili Peppers tomorrow!!!! I wanted tickets for my birthday (they were here 4 days after my birthday), but couldn't because of my back. Hoping they come back when I'm all better so I can see them (or I win powerball so I can fly out to a show or 4 - should probably buy a ticket if I want that to happen...lol) :)

Having 2 non smokers with you should help you to stay strong, but having a PV & 0 nic might be a smart insurance policy to have on hand in case the urge becomes overwhelming (drinking, plus a smoker, plus great music can equal a whole lot of temptation!) You probably won't use it, but you might be glad to have it.

The anti-nicotine hiring policies are ridiculous. I'm surprised it hasn't become a bigger legal issue for the companies that choose to practice them.

Whether you bring a pv & 0 nic or not, have an AWESOME time at the show tomorrow & please please please tell me how wonderful & glorious & peppery phenomenal it is, and how it went with or without pv :)

It's great to see a vaper from my area, I've yet to see one in public. BTW, my mom is a nurse at Grant and she's a smoker. The policy must only apply to new hires. She doesn't smoke at work, but she's a pretty heavy smoker at home. I wonder what she'd do if they applied that policy to all their workers.

Congrats on quitting nic! I'm one of the people who are very disturbed that anyone would be discriminated against because they use nicotine. I can't believe that's not illegal! We should always look to fight back against this discriminatory nonsense. There are lots of places who are so hard up for nurses they would probably buy the juice for you or almost anything else you wanted. However, if you feel better off the nic then it's a silver lining, although the cloud itself is vile!!!

I agree the cloud is vile and if I wasn't so desperate for a job I would be a bit more Norma Ray about it but I'm getting desperate to find a job. The majority of my classmates haven't found work (class of 80 some) so I have a lot of competition. I do feel way better without vaping and I have never been more motivated to start exercising. I was able to run the farthest I have in a long time the other night (which isn't much lol) so I don't think I want to even risk what I've done with using Zero nic juice. Of course this could be resultant of not smoking cigarettes for year and a half.

And it's not every hospital that's doing the zero nic policy...just enough of them to have made it worth while for me to quit. I was wanting to quit for over a year now so I figured I'd use it as motivation. God bless the E-Cig though b/c without a doubt I never would have quit smoking at all ever.

RHCP was AMAZING! Survived with no PV...didn't even miss it or really even think about it actually. The only time I thought about anything nicotine related was when my friend went 3 hours without a cigarette and I remember thinking that he should have brought his PV so then he could go into the bathroom or even take some puffs out in our seats (they were smoking some "other" stuff down our row so I doubt they would have said anything).

I think the protection of nic users is something people should be fighting for in their individual States by contacting their representatives as well as the ACLU. Its ideology-driven discrimination plain and simple. Think how outraged people would be if there were similar hiring practices for caffeine users! (which the medial field pretty much lives on) I said years ago that if you let this kind of discrimination (then smokers) take place... then YOU'RE NEXT! and Hillary started it btw with the nanny-state/fascist/progressives continuing it. Totally dysfunctional when one considers (delete and insert) "a previously illegal substance" just going legal in Oregon (I think)... yup ideology and extreme prejudice (defined irrational.) I'm glad I don't live in New York where salt and Big Gulps are government controlled.

I smoked cigarettes for more than 52 years. 2.5 PAD when I started vaping. I started with an Original BLU ecig. It was crap, but I knew from the first drag off of it that I could switch off tobacco to ecigs. Did both for about 6 months, then finally totally switched to ecig using DIY Cinnamon eliquid. After about a year of this I became concerned I was vaping too much Cinnamon. Next DIY batch I left the Flavor out. 24 hours later I was vaping up a storm. Then it dawned on me that I had also ACCIDENTLY left the NICOTINE out of the mix. Decided if I could do without it for 24 hours that I didn't need it. From then on I vaped just my 50/50 blend of VG/PG. VG is rather sweet, so made for a sweet vape. After a couple years of this, mostly oral gratification vaping. I needed surgery for a bowel problem. Didn't remember to take my ecig for the 911 ambulance rides. Was in hospitals a total of 22 days. So, now I don't smoke or vape. After 52 years of smoking tobacco cigarettes I ACCIDENTLY quit smoking.

I'm living proof, if I can do it. . .anybody can do it. But, you gotta wanna.

Cheers,
otrpu
