The Nicselect nic. does have a harshness to it that other nics. may not have. It may be still in the coil when you tried straight VG. The VG you are using is USP grade, correct? With the "best before" date a couple years out, right?
The over temp. cut-off may have kicked in and has malfunctioned. Only a guess. Good luck. It may be deemed abuse which makes warranty out of the question.
Provari V1 with cartos. Took puff coughed, took another..cough, right then I knew it would work. I was coughing almost every drag when I smoked. Didn't completely quit right away but cut out a pack a day off the hop.

Are the newer coils from the same supplier? Maybe they are knock-offs.
FWIW. I use 0.5 or 0.3 ohm coils due to the wider coil ID/bore. I can twist a Q-tip in and out a few times to clean out the gunk build-up and keep the coil fresh. I can get months out of a single coil doing this.
