Facts about dry burning SS 316L

I was a pipefitter/welder for nearly 40 years. I’ve known countless welders, and have been friends with many. I can’t think of a single one I have known that died from welding related diseases. Maybe it’s happened. I just don’t know any. I have known some who have passed away because of other...

Facts about dry burning SS 316L

Yep. There’s no reason for it, regardless of what metal you’re using to make your coils. The only purpose in dryburning coils, in between wick changes, is to solidify and remove the gunk that has collected. You don’t need to heat a coil up to orange or white hot to do that. Just barely a dull...

Facts about dry burning SS 316L

The difference between welding Stainless Steel and dry burning a coil is that when welding, the metal is shielded from the atmosphere via shielding gas or flux. While the metal is in its critical state of being liquid, or just below, it is protected from outside air. When you dry burn a coil...

    Video Reflection on REOs Mods

It’s kinda sad that squonking has just started getting popular in the last year or so, when those of us Reonauts who have been around for a while have been telling people about the virtues of squonking for years. But along with squonking’s new found popularity, have come an endless number of...

    Video Reflection on REOs Mods

The only other mods that Another analogy: REOs are the Harley Davidsons of the squonk world. They are the granddaddy, the owners who have been around for a while still use them, and are passionate about them.

Good video. Thanks Sloth. I’m around, and check the forum frequently, although I haven’t been posting as much as I used to. But I’m still here.

How to stop a shorted mech mod from exploding

I did a job in Tucson years ago. I was more concerned about scorpions than I was about palmetto bugs.

    Rising ohms?

It’s also important to adjust your wire gauge when using SS, depending on how fast or slow you like your ‘heat up’ to be. For example: When I used to use Kanthal, I liked using 26g, for the number of wraps I liked, and the heat up time. For a comparable heat up and number of wraps, I use 24g...

    Rising ohms?

I build to a ‘cold’ resistance that is lower than I would build with Kanthal. For example, if I like Kanthal at, say, .45 ohms, on a particular atty, I’ll build with 316L at around .3 ohms, cold. When the coil is fired, the resistance will rise to .4 - .45

    Rising ohms?

It’s the nature of SS wire. It’s why it works in TC mode. As the wire heats up, the resistance rises. I’ve been using 316L in my mech squonkers for a couple years now.

I Love My Dinosaur Gear Thread

I have enough old gear to start my own vaping museum. My search for the optimal vape, for me, ended with mechanical squonkers. It’s all I use; REOs, Woodvils, Grands, P67s, and Pdib Li’l Pinches. I have no desire nor need for anything else.
