Hmmm ok so by thinning is that cutting it at an angle basically? If so should I be cutting at an angle from the top of the wick or the bottom?

I have read through the subtank mini thread and have seen your posts in there also, the OCC rebuild looks very helpful and nice that it is rayon so I bookmarked that for future use. I am mainly going to be trying the rba first.

In the mini thread I have the fundamentals figured. Very tight wick like you've mentioned. Tails short and just touching the deck, juice channels clear. The only thing I'm not sure on is the tails.

I'm very new to rebuilding this style, before this all I've ever done is the kanger single coils so thanks for the info.
Yes, cut the wick on a bias, from the bottom

Leaving the chimney loose ended up giving me some leaking, so I re-coiled and wicked. When I was cleaning off the base, I noticed I had a tiny little fluff ball in each of the channels. I'm thinking that when I was trying to clear the channels after putting the chimney on, I might have actually pulled some loose and stuffed them into the channels instead. It's still too early for me to tell if it's a success or not, but I managed to give myself a bit of a head rush trying to get a dry hit, so I'm hopeful!

Most (I assume) of us don't stand over our toaster breathing the fumes. I do stand in my e-coli filled bathroom and dry burn gunked coils over the sink. If the smoke is really bad I turn on the exhaust fan. (Or if I did a stinky) But that is burnt juice, not metal fumes IMO.

It's still better than smoking I think (I hope)

I wouldn't discount the whole thing though. The comments on diacytl and "organic" flavorings have some worth.
I follow Dr. F's research and I definately respect it and him for doing it. This aspect however concerns me not. Something is gonna kill me, doubt it is my kanthal being fired, adjusted or dry burned. And if it is... I dont care.

I'm going to slash my wrist. So no more rainbow colored compressed titanium coils for me? Meh. That's depressing :(

Now more seriously... So how do we know that the manufacturer didn't torch our wires to anneal them prior to shipping them to us? How tell apart wire that is intact on a 'molecular' level from one that isn't?

This sounds unfeasible to track. At least he said titanium doesn't seem as bad as nickel or chromium.

My question is: if a two months old titanium coil, heated up 90.000 times maintains it's exact resistivity when it was new, how the heck is metal leeching into our vape?

It was being such a great day and now they ruined it :(

Tony

I'm going to choose to believe the metallurgist who said it's nonsense and that metals don't have 'molecules' and that heating is doing good for the wire, not bad.

Of course I choose to do this because it makes most logical sense, and in no way because it reinforces my pre-existing beliefs and biases and tells me exactly what I want to hear. It's very important to emphasise that.

Tony, I don't think it changes anything you already knew about Titanium. Don't make it grey, before that there's no new reason to think it's harmful.

And as I said in the Titanium thread the other day - even if it is harmful, how likely is it that it's more harmful than smoking? Or even close to as harmful?

Say No to Asbestos; most other things are more likely than not to be OK, I reckon :)

That metallurgist's quote in full:

BUT as a (former) metallurgist I do know about metals and I have to say that all what was said about metals is not worth any attention. It was all wrong. It was even said "you are basically destroying the bonds between the metal molecules", which is just funny for a metallurgist: metals do not have molecules and heating does not destroy bonds. For kanthal heating is very useful thing. You should dry burn your kanthal coils to make them healthier. First, you remove contaminations - no solvent can remove them as good as dry burning. Second, you form good protective layer on a wire.
Just an example when specialist is trying to discuss things in which he is not a specialist.
Please, dry burn your kanthal coils. Please, do not overheat them while vaping (including legs).

You are correct, none of us should. We should not be inhaling anything but clean air. But here we are.

My wife has severe COPD. It's not fun.
I hear ya. My mother is in the pre oxygen stage of copd and it is killing an uncle as I type this. I smoked stinkies for over 25 years, quit for a couple 2-3 year intervals and if it wasnt for vaping I would still be smoking cigs.
For me it is the lesser of two evils.

Sitting down, facing forward.
I don't want to get in a pi**ing contest" about metals, but, to my understanding, limited as it may be, they are crystaline structures made of molecules which, in turn, are made of atoms. I certainly could be, and probably am, wrong about that but the bottom line is that some very, very, significant heat would be required to disturb those structures and their bonds.
