So until now I've just been wrapping coils around whatever screwdriver I had lying around then checking the resistance to make sure it was safe to fire, because I didn't know the measurements on my screwdrivers and just eyeballed it. Today I got some different drill bit sizes so I feel I'm ready to use steam engine to build coils where I'll know the resistance beforehand. However I am confused by the coil calculator

Twenty-eight wraps? Am I reading that right? It's set up for a dual build, so is that 14 wraps per coil or 28 each? Either way seems prohibitively large. Am I doing this right?

28 wraps per coil. Your inner diameter should be set to the diameter of the drill bit used. Your leg length (as measured from the middle of the coil to the point of contact with the post) is also low.

how would you make this more manageable? smaller wire?

Yes... just reduce wire size to 26 or 28 should get you there.
