Ladies and gentlemen, for your entertainment and amusement, I present you with Movie Quiz number 112. :)

*****

The thread will run its course for a week or so, and I'll bump it with hints and whatnot as needed. Answers will be posted when the time feels right.

There are eight screenshots below. Most of them should be fairly recognizable if you've seen the films. So, which of these movies can you identify?

.Please answer with movie numbers only, not titles..

:) You're lightening up! I actually know half of them without reservation.

#2, of course (I'm more a fan of his tv show than his movies, but this one is okay).

#5 -- Absolutely hilarious! Love it. So many of his routines are priceless.

#6 -- Iconic movie! I'm not a fan of the genre in general, but this one is a must-see. Perfect in so many ways.

#8 -- Great actor, decent production values, but the whole concept belongs in a 1950s pulp rather than on the big screen.

For some reason, #4 seems vaguely familiar, but I know I'll never get it.

I'm pretty sure about #7, but I just can't put a name to it. It'll probably come to me as soon as I his "Post Reply."

Yes, in the interest of giving credit where credit is due, OldBatty suggested using the movie in screenshot #2. :thumb:

How about an early set of hints? These are the "main character" actors who are either not pictured, or whose images are obscured in the screenshot:

#1: Robert Duvall is the gentleman on the right, wearing the hat.
#2: On the left, Andy Griffith's face is obscured by his salute.
#3: Steve Buscemi, (not pictured), plays a prominent role in this film.
#4: Jon Voight is definitely NOT doing a Rocky impersonation in this screenshot.
#5: You can't see Jackie Gleason's face here because he is leaning over, looking into the box.
#6: Clint Eastwood is the man who is not pictured here, (nor named).
#7: You can probably tell that's Joe Pesci in the center of the shot, but Robert De Niro is also a main character in this one.
#8: Nope, this one is already obvious enough. ;)

I'll get a more typical set of hints posted tomorrow night.

It's awfully quiet in here.......

Here's your first set of hints:

#1: After his happy life spins out of control, a preacher from Texas changes his name, goes to Louisiana and starts preaching on the radio. He soon befriends a retired, local Reverend, and together they start a campaign to renovate an old church.

#2: Will Stockdale is a country bumpkin, drafted into the Air Force and too dumb to realize he's driving everyone around him crazy -- no one more than his barracks sergeant, Orville King. Sergeant King, a career military man, is one who survives in the military by not making waves, but he may not be able to stay under the radar while Will is under his command.

#3: Set in the summer after high school graduation, Enid and Rebecca are outsiders in a world slowly being engulfed by fake 50's diners and Starbucks. When the two play a mean joke on a much older, geeky record collector, (Seymour, played by Steve Buscemi), Enid finds a kindred soul and begins to discover the complexities of becoming an adult in the modern world.

#4: A hardened convict and a younger prisoner escape from a brutal prison in the middle of winter, only to find themselves on an out of control train with a female railway worker while being pursued by the vengeful head of prison security.

Hope these helped!

Thanks for the clues!

#1 doesn't seem like the kind of movie I'd watch.

I remember reading a review that said #3 was a sort of drab remake of Daisies (1966). I made a note to see it if it ever comes on tv.

I had a chance to watch #4 just a month or so ago, but life interfered. It is on my list to watch when it's available.

Yeah, movie #1 isn't something I'd typically watch either. But, I've always liked Robert Duvall, and he received many accolades for his performance as this movie's main character. He also wrote, directed, and largely financed the film himself.

Regarding your comments on movie #3: I've never heard of Daisies, and the plot summary on IMDB doesn't tell me much. But, based on that alone, while I'm sure there could easily be similarities, (both stories revolve around a youthful female friendship, after all), I don't think #3 is a remake. At the same time, it's entirely possible that Daisies provided some inspiration for the comic book series that spawned this movie.

I just recently re-watched movie #4, and while I absolutely still enjoyed it, I also have to admit that the movie hasn't aged well.

Thanks for chiming in and helping to keep the thread moving. :toast:

Hints, part 2:

#5: The wealthy U.S. Bates (played by Jackie Gleason) takes his bratty son to his department store and offers him anything in it as a gift. Eric chooses a black janitor (played by Richard Pryor) who has made him laugh with his antics. At first the man suffers many indignities, but he gradually teaches the lonely boy what it is like to have and to be a friend.

#6: A gunfighting stranger comes to the small settlement of Lago and is hired to bring the townsfolk together in an attempt to hold off three outlaws who are on their way.

#7:
Greed, deception, money, power, and murder occur between two mobster best friends and a trophy wife over a gambling empire in Las Vegas.

#8: An astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where humans are the oppressed and enslaved race.

Answers coming Sunday.

Thanks for the clues! I still had trouble remembering the exact name of #7, but it finally came to me. Good movie!

Regarding #3 being a remake -- I think they meant general theme: two amoral girls feel disenfranchised and react to it, which includes being mean to men who are attracted to them.

You really should watch Daises (1966) when you can -- I know everyone talks about how culturally important it is, and why it's a milestone in EE cinema, but it's really just a very fun movie.

Regarding the idea of posting the quiz in the Lounge: I've been there and done that, and it failed completely. The first movie quizzes I posted were put up in the Lounge area, and if I recall correctly, after four quizzes came and went without a single reply, I decided to try moving it elsewhere.

So, for now I'll just keep posting them here. Maybe the next one will get more participants. Or not.

The Apostle is a very good movie, but it's certainly not flawless. It's also kind of a tricky recommendation. Although I'm not a religious person by any measure, I would imagine religious folks would enjoy and appreciate the film and its message. As I'd mentioned above, the movie appealed to me primarily because of Robert Duvall and the praise he received for his work on this project, which was clearly a labor of love for him.

Runaway Train is also a good movie, but Eric Roberts' acting is mostly sub-par, almost to the point of distraction. In spite of that, the movie is still a worthwhile watch, IMO, although in some respects it hasn't aged very well.
