All this talk of tracking an individual down through an IP address is annoying and plain ignorance. Pulling an address off a physical address from an IP is tedious and a pain in the .... What you see in the movies, where some law enforcement officer/spy/government agency does it in a few keystrokes is plain fantasy.

Can it be done? Sure! With the right resources at your disposal. But cybercrime division isn't going to be involved tracking down a handful of vapers when there are thousands of case files open with far bigger fish to fry. This degree of paranoia is not doing anyone any favours.

Generally, if the authorities want to obtain a physical address associated with an IP address, they get a warrant and go directly to the individual's provider. The provider then looks up the IP address in use at the time, references the account using it, and voila! The authorities now have your name and address.

That's true, but getting that physical address with an IP isn't easy. With mobile access, especially, every access node is a connection session and a dynamic IP is assigned. All they can do is zone in to the router.

In my business, we've been trawling through various techniques to get physical addresses against IPs, and speaking from the perspective of someone who does this regularly, it's not an easy thing to do. And demanding the physical address from an ISP requires a court order and tons of paper work before and after that. And most of us have dynamic IPs; restart your router and a new IP is generated.

Imagining that someone would do that just to confiscate your mod, a few tanks and a couple of bottle of juice just isn't reasonable. You're not consuming hard drugs and your mod isn't a weapon of mass destruction. LOL a vape mod would just be a weapon of personal distraction! Hahahaha!

It IS an easy thing to do. In the case of an Internet provider, your modem's MAC address is associated with the IP address being used. It's then a small matter of looking up the address assignment to the account.

For cellular providers, it's also fairly easy as your phone's information (Phone number, IEMI, MAC Address, etc.) is also associated with the IP address in use at the time. Again, all the provider needs to do is look up device information and voila! They have a full name and address.

Another way law enforcement can nail you via mobile devices is by using an IMSI catcher (Stingray).

Now.. The claims that someone can get your physical address just by looking up the IP address are totally, and thoroughly false.

Exactly! MAC addresses are another thing.

The original post was on based on "someone" hunting you down at home JUST from getting your IP address through a web login or email. Pffffttttt!

If "someone" had your MAC address in the first place it'd be easy to ID you. Same rationale goes for a cell provider. But just searching through an IP address obtained from a seller is like going through a needle in a haystack for every single IP address logged, multiplied by the number of SPs. Super PITA.

But doesn't an IMSI device need to be in the same proximity as the cell device?

Yep, IMSI catchers need to be in the general vicinity of the cellular device in order to provide the "stronger" signal so the phone connects to it rather than a cell tower. The problem, however, is you don't know that one is in the area. They're very small and can be used in a van very easily.

Way too much effort unless the buyer is in the direct vicinity calling the seller. Even sting ops have a budget to run on.
They should just save all the effort and legalise it AND make money in taxes.

Maybe the paranoid guys should just wear aluminum foil around their heads while they vape. Hahahahahahahahaha!
