Upgraded or "downgraded " not sure. This lathe was the top of technology in 1850 : cast iron against wood, crossed slide movement, tool holder ....
Just a revolution for this period .
Still in use in my work shop but for light (and dirty ) works like grinding or tool sharpening, engraving ....
There is more life in this than in certain person

I could be mistaken but the bearings and chuck looked newer than I'd expect.
Some of the newer tools are down grades, metal quality in hand tools alone is going down hill fast!

The motorization was made with feet . That could do great job, just keep in mind that the mandrel have just 20mm
of thickness.... With a 200mm chuck
The drilling chuck pictured is just an horror I made with a hand drilling machine.....
The scale drum have been made on the lathe itself.
This is my first lathe, found it just before it was destroyed . Do what was possible to use it, then use it to prepare a newer lathe, then use the newer to prepare a newer....
I have 3 lathes, the most expensive cost me 200 euros and many many hours of work ....But is now ready for a new century of work
