Crap,The wisdom of the Web says that he did indeed stab his second wife, but it was with a penknife (pretty severe wounds, too), and it was in 1960. He did indeed fail in his 1969 mayoral campaign, but I saw no indication that the stabbing incident (the missus refused to press charges, sheesh) was what tanked it.
