Got to work a little early yesterday morning. Since I didn't have to be at my desk for awhile, I parked myself outside in the smoking area to have a good vape before I went in. One of the other guys who vapes came out and we were discussing his gear. He just upgraded from an eGo battery to a Kanger subox and we were comparing his to my ipv D2.

While we were talking, a woman comes out, fires up one of her cancer sticks and proceeds to tell us, "my mother's lung specialist says those things are worse than smoking and they have antifreeze in them!"

I wasn't in the frame of mind to argue with her so I just told her, "go tell your mother's lung specialist that he needs to go do some more research."

With that, I took another big drag, exhaled a nice cloud and went back to the conversation with my fellow vaper. She got mad, stubbed out her cigarette and went back inside. My vaping buddy just shook his head and laughed. I figured it was a win for me since she didn't even finish her smoke. :D

I can't believe this stuff is still flying around, much less coming from doctors.

This pretty much sums it up. People spouting off second hand misinformation without actually doing any research for themselves.

Normally, I would have been happy to explain to her that the information she had was incorrect and direct her towards more truthful information. However she came at me with an attitude and of course her information came from a DOCTOR so it couldn't possibly wrong. I just felt like it would have been a waste of breath to try and correct her.

I trust my chest CT that was all clear on 10/05/15.

But I do feel kind of sorry for the smokers who believe it, better health is just past the city of misinformation and they may never venture that far. Before I started vaping I didn't spout off stuff like that but I was skeptical of it working.

Ive found that comments like the one made by your coworker, are usually from smokers in denial. They know they need to quit and when faced with a viable alternative their minds and addictions start producing any excuse, no matter how ludicrous, just to desperately hold on.

Very much akin to cognitive dissonance.

People like that usually just dont want to "hear" so it probably would have been a waste of your time & energy anyway... ;)

Whatever the subject (vaping or other) they just like to repeat the one or two bits &pieces theyve heard "around" on tv, from friends of a friend etc. (often out of context too....)

How many years after knowing that smoking might do serious damage to us did most of us continue smoking? I count myself as one who "didn't want to hear" ..........anything.

Just smile and say, "Enjoy your lung cancer when it comes."

I dunno, guys n' gals. I was once a smoker. In denial. Don't know that I'd be saying that thing about lung cancer to anyone ....... if you know anyone fighting cancer,it's not even something to say to another human being, ya know? :(

Sorry, but I have nothing but compassion for smokers, having been an addict myself at one time.

I do understand why they would say things like this.....how many things did we say to ourselves when we continued to smoke..........maybe they want to try vaping and have heard a lot of bad things about vaping, just like they heard bad things about chantix, about patches, about wellbutrin........etc. etc. etc. You know it's hard for them, they are scared and in the clutches of the cigs.

Please, have patience with these poor smokers.

THEY"VE ALREADY BEEN DUMPED ON BY EVERYBODY ELSE.........last thing they need is to be DUMPED ON BY VAPERS, huh?

I guess I feel a deep compassion/empathy for smokers, and I am very likely to give them a lot of rope. I remember being there. Never felt "smug" about being a vaper, just that I absorbed the message, I was ready.........some of them aren't yet. Patience and caring, grasshopper.

As for me, I am only practicing harm reduction. Can I tell any smoker, or ex smoker,or even myself with 100% or even 95% CERTAINTY that I won't have lung damage after 20+ years of vaping? No, I cannot. Because I don't know that. Neither does anyone else. I only know it is harm reduction from smoking combusibles. But there are many variables besides just combustion.

I'm sure not going to be getting all "smug" about vaping, esp. not to smokers since it only seems like yesterday that I was smoking, even though it was 3+ years ago. But I smoked for many decades. How DUMB WAS I?"???

I just told her, "go tell your mother's lung specialist that he needs to go do some more research."

Maybe you can print out some research for her.......you know, try to save her life.

It wouldn't hurt to try, just say "I have this stuff, thought maybe you'd like to take a look at it, make your own decision...............not trying to win anything here."

Lol. I was going to say the cardiologist I spoke to when I had my stress test a few weeks ago was pleased that I switched from cigarettes to vaping.

If a person is willing to criticize something without doing any real research, I don't have the time or energy to argue with them.

I agree with Racehorse. I smoked for 42+ years before trying vaping as an alternative. After eons of "you shouldn't smoke" and "if you just had some will power" OMG. I tried everything to quit smoking. Even thought about vaping before it was "cool", but did not do it back then. For some reason quitters are harder on smokers than anyone else - now why is that?? Do you remember quitters being rude to you? I do, and hope I never act like that to anyone smoker or not. Without vaping most of us would still be smoking, try to remember that. We all know ignorance and fear make a bad combo and a lot of people still have both when it comes to vaping, please be patient with others. :vapor:

Oh well. Your loss.

Battles are won, one individual at a time. That is how one changes perceptions.

Besides, reaching out is rewarding. Changing hearts and minds. And, most of all knowing that maybe by putting yourself out a little you helped save a person's life.

But......Guess people who "criticize" stuff just aren't worth being saved, huh?

F' 'em then............ right?

I have never felt that only people who agree with me are worth something. That would make me a truly ignorant person, wouldn't it?

Hey, its not just vaping. There are people out there on the front lines, and on the back lines, helping gang members, prison inmates, alcoholics, drug addicts, teenage mothers, homeless people, the illiterate, and yes, even KKK and white supremicist types........and all kinds of other "throw a way" humans (some people see them that way)......

... but most human beings are worth helping, at least, that has been my experience. :)

Despite that we are, all of us, terribly stupid, ignorant, stubborn, imperfect, fragile and fallible (just in different ways).
