Black wick at coil

I just got a subtank mini and am using the rba. We'll I went to REFILL it a.d the base separated from the top cap and I got a good look at th he wick and coil and the wick was black where it touched the coil. I'm new to this. I didn't notice any bad taste but I replaced the wick anyway. Is it normal for that to happen?

Your wick may have been a little tight.
