The CASAA Research Fund is seeking to crowdfund a new research project that we expect will provide clear scientific evidence that there is no gateway effect from e-cigarettes and other THR products to smoking. The proposed research, directed by Dr. Karyn Heavner, would build on the methodology research CASAA's Dr. Carl V Phillips recently published. The researchers would review all the existing gateway claims, in the scientific literature and important other media, and assess whether there is any evidence presented that actually supports the claim. (The hypothesis is that there is not.) The details can be found at CASAA: CASAA Research Fund Launches Fundraising for Study of Gateway Claims

We need $7500 from the community because the CASAA general fund will be matching every donation 1-for-1, to reach the budget of $15,000. This is a really important bit of research for our advocacy efforts because the gateway claim is a constant thorn in our side. We know there is not legitimate basis for it, but we have no definitive research to point to that shows that. This project promise to produce very high bang-for-the-buck, as is the goal of the Research Fund.

UPDATE September 4, 2015: CASAA is pleased to announce that thanks to your generosity and support, we have reached our fundraising goal for our research project to study gateway claims. We expect that the researchers will have a working paper ready for comments and review within the next four to five months. Thank you to all who contributed to support this important effort. This project will be a great use of your donations, providing both good science and an invaluable tool for advocacy that would not exist otherwise.
