The lower gauge carries the voltage, the wraps are heated by the center wire, so the large wire heats up better. Also, smaller gauge works better for the outer wire. The idea is to create
juice pockets, so the coil acts almost like a wick in itself. The smaller wires does this better...32-36 gauge works great (I usually use 32, easier to work with)
One thing you can do is use multiple strands of a smaller gauge as the center wire, but it's a bit more difficult to wrap, specially if you are new to Claptons.
My preferred is 24/32 for RBA's and 28/32 for RTA's.
