Cleaning an Ego-T atty?

Okay so I broke my atomizer last night. I pulled the spike plate out and found all kinds of black gunk and most of the wicking had already fallen out...I believe that's where my burnt taste was coming from. What could have caused all the wicking to just fall out into the atomizer? Anyways, my friend pulled the rest of the wicking out of the spike so now I can't use it really. Atomizer works wonderfully, though. I tried dripping a little but you have to put a drop like every two hits and its really annoying. I think if somebody has a popped atty with a good spike and wick then I could use it and have a good atty again. Where would I need to start a thread so I can get another spike with a good wick?

You can supposedly use silica rope from a hardware store, that was floating around another thread somewhere here.

I don't know if I would be able to get in the needle plate tight enough so it wouldn't just fall out. Is there any kind of method for getting it to stay in there?
