Clinical trial finds Camel Snus as effective as 4mg nicotine gum for smoking cessation, and finds far more smokers continued using Camel Snus than continued using nicotine gum.
Randomised clinical trial of snus versus medicinal nicotine among smokers interested in product switching -- Hatsukami et al. -- Tobacco Control

Unfortunately, the authors of this study (who have demonized and grossly exaggerated the negligible risks of smokeless tobacco, and have opposed smokers switching to smokeless tobacco for the past two decades) criticized Camel Snus as being NO MORE effective than nicotine gum for smoking cessation, and grossly exaggerated the risks of Camel Snus (by harping upon totally irrelevant nitrosamine levels found in snus, which have never been found to be associated with any type of cancer in humans).

Neither the authors nor the journal (which advocates tobacco prohibition) issued a press release about this study's findings, as they only issue press releases when their studies find something the authors can confuse and scare the public.

It is highly doubtful that snus would lend itself well in clinical trials. Like electronic cigarettes, there is a learning curve to find out which snus brand, nicotine strength, etc, works for an individual. Camel snus is underpowered and overly sweet. For some light smokers it may work, but for everyone else going with a swedish snus, with a large selection of flavors and nicotine strengths would be a much better choice with much better results.
