I haven't used silica or Ekowool in a few years, but when I did I would torch it before use to remove any potential impurities. Once it was in the coil I might have dry fired it just because I could, but I never made it a ritual and I'm not sure what difference it would make or if I would notice.
farsalinos and carvalho have recommended avoiding inhaling oxides of metal. due to my welding experience, i agree. ekowool remains inert at red hot temperatures and i will hang up six feet at a time and torch to sterilize. wire can be wiped off with alcohol if it is dirty. since my gennies are never less than half full and i use thin wire and high ohms i have never experienced a red hot coil or hot spot or dry hit with my chosen combination. i have added distilled water to max vg to promote wicking. i tilt. if i can taste fingers on the wire several big hits without inhale will fix it.
Yeah, of you are going to wick with silica you need to remove any non-silica thread that some types of cord have as stuffing down the middle, leaving a straw. After this you need to torch it to orange hot to burn off any manufacturing residue.
