Elaine Keller stepped down as CASAA President in April, and Julie Woessner takes over.

Elected president in 2011, Elaine has served during a time of intense activity and a major increase in threats to the THR user community in the USA. CASAA is notable for its numerous successes in supporting community activists against threats to ecig use. An honest appraisal is that without CASAA, the map would be very different: numerous States and cities would have banned ecig sales and use; and Elaine's contribution has been critical to that success.

She took on the senior role at CASAA in a difficult period when the first President, Michal Douglas, retired and board support at CASAA was patchy. Elaine helped to re-energise CASAA and make it the most important ecig/THR community association in the world.

She made important contacts in the research field such as Dr. Phillips, Prof Rodu and Dr. Polosa, and also with key players in tobacco control. She kept up on all of the research being done and maintained a running list for the website. She spoke at TSPAC hearings, FDA listening sessions and before the OMB. She made connections with industry at the TMA conferences, making CASAA known as an important consumer voice to the tobacco industry. She was the main contact for CASAA and handled all of the media enquiries, distributed tasks for the other directors and kept board meetings on point.

Elaine hands over at a critical time in US vaping: the FDA will soon implement regulations; cigarette sales are falling and this will lead to a huge pushback against e-cigarettes from all the city/State/government finance managers, industries, NGOs and tobacco control orgs who depend on revenues from smoking; and when the cigarette industry will begin to try and control the market.

She will be a hard act to follow, so let's give Julie all the support we can manage in the increasingly tough era we now enter.
