A good deal of discussion took place in this thread (Stainless Steel mesh, Oxide discussion. | E-Cigarette Forum regarding the creation of Chromium6 (and Chromium3 etc) when using Stainless Steel mesh as the wicking material in an atty. If I remember correctly, after consulting with various metallurgists etc it was decided that the likelihood of creating and inhaling Chromium oxides was pretty low. It will also depend on what you mean by "torching" and how hot you're actually heating the mesh, and I believe that it required the presence of a strong acid as well.
All of that being said, I don't use a torch for oxidizing and choose to do it with a mech by pulsing the coil. This allows me to only oxidize the portion of the wick in contact with the coil.
