Imagine that! PAYING to have your work published versus BEING PAID to publish.

This is not in any way a post condoning the actions and activities that are the subject of this thread, rather information about mechanisms of scientific publishing. The work in question was piublished, as almost every paper is these days, under the Open Access model. This merely means that the author of an accepted paper pays charges levied by the journal that then enable free on-line access to that work for all. In previous times, access to a paper to which you or your institution did not have a subscription, required paying an access charge to download the paper, or get a reprint. There is nothing in the Open Access model that says that a paper has not been subjected to rigourous (hopefully, but not always) peer review before acceptance. So I cant just go and pay a couple of thousand dollars to a journal and publish anything I like! The scientific review process, as flawed as it is (and a whole other discussion) is not affected by OA!
