Help needed with painting box mod! (safety help)

So I have an old box mod a friend built for me and the paint is chipping so I want to repaint it. The mod is meant to resemble a hexohm. Underneat the chipping paint it just looks silver so not sure what it is.

I was wondering what paint is safe to use? Don't want it exploding on me or something. Is oil paint safe? Acrylic? Also is it safe to use mod podge to seal it?

Any help would be lovely!

most likely aluminum.... aluminum doesnt hold paint well, check out marine paint supplies for a good primer and a good acrylic paint. Best bet is to get it anodized, but that can be pricey....

Triple coat of automotive clear-coat works well to seal it. You can get a spray can of it at most big parts stores.

Sand it down. Wipe it with lacquer thinner or acetone and immediately spray it with etching primer. Regular primer wont bond to aluminum. Aluminum starts oxidizing almost instantly. PITA to be honest. Then you can paint it.
You can always have it vinyl wrapped.

Try truck bed liner as it has been tested on Mythbusters for durability.

Go to Olympia Vapor works. Lots of ideas on 'swirling', annealing, etc. Video tutorials. You can use cans too, pedestrian..

Welcome and glad you joined. Paint is always prone to scratching and chipping. Could go for a custom wrap? Silicone ones are pricey.

I've used "Contact Paper" (self adhesive vinyl) to wrap my iStick 20w a few times. It's cheap and comes in many styles and colors. If it gets ratty looking, just peel it off and wrap again. Ebay has sample sizes of sticky back vinyl for cars. I bought some carbon fiber vinyl for a few bucks. Just a thought.
