The TSA’s Guidelines For Flying With Your eCigs

You already have a lot of things on your mind when you are getting ready to board an airplane, like did you forget to pack something important or the possibility of missing your connecting flight—so let’s do our best to leave your ecigs and eliquids off of that list.

Simply put, the guidelines that the TSA has for liquids also apply to your eliquids too. For your batteries, tanks, cartidges and other accessories—unless you are carrying a crazy amount, you really shouldn’t stress about it at all. The reason being is that the TSA currently does not have a restriction on carrying eliquids or ecigarette products. You can read for yourself on the TSA’s current blog post on the topic, in regards to using them while you are in flight you should first call and check with your specific airline first before blowing a cloud of vapor in the bathroom where you may just set off the smoke alarm.

The 3-1-1 Carry-On Rule:

Surprisingly, the TSA has not set any rules yet that specifically addresses ecigs and eliquids. But their rules for liquids apply to any sort of liquid and that includes your eliquid stash. So make it easy on yourself and follow their guidelines on the amount that you can take with you.

When bringing any sort of liquid with you on your flight you should always follow the TSA’s 3-1-1 carry on rule. You can read more on the specificities of the rule here. The quick explanation being any liquids, aerosols, creams, pastes and gels need to be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less per container. They must be placed in a 1 quart sized, clear, plastic and zip-top bag. Only one bag per passenger can be placed in the screening bin as the bag limit prevents any one person from carrying more than allowed.

With some easy googling, you will find that very few people have had issues with their vapes when going through TSA checkpoints. The reason being is that they were smart and prepared for the occasion, make it easy on yourself and be prepared too. Don’t declare your items for inspection at the checkpoint. You know that you aren’t carrying anything prohibited or suspicious with you so just allow the TSA to do their job and move on. The most important thing being is that you shouldn’t bring any attention to yourself when it is not necessary, if they have a question for you regarding the items just let them know it is liquid nicotine that you use for your ecig. No big deal.

Tips For When You Bring Your Vapes On A Plane:

1. Store your ecig batteries and charger in your laptop case along with your other electronics

2. Disconnect your batteries from their tanks / cartridges for the checkpoints

3. Don’t bring a bulky ecig mod that looks like a pipe bomb, pen bomb or any sort of bomb (why make it harder on yourself and on them?)

4. Bring a self-addressed envelope with you that is large enough to fit your device. That way if they don’t let you take it on the plane you can mail it back to yourself. (This is unlikely to happen, but better safe than losing your favorite device)

5. Remember, airplanes do have smoke alarms. Please be respectful of those passengers around you and the laws on airplanes and don't try to vape in-flight. We are all advocates for the vaping industry and we need to put our best foot forward always.
