It's probably a platinum-rhodium alloy, used for furnaces that need to get hotter than the maximum temperature of nichrome or Kanthal. Since we don't get anywhere even close to the melting point of Kanthal or nichrome, platinum wire would be pointless, as well as pointlessly expensive.

Kanthal costs around $5-10 (depending on gauge) per 100 feet and works just fine.
