Dang creative types, what with their talents and abilities...

:2cool:

I have to confess I have a dark deep seated envy towards these guys that are good with tools. They talk about lathes, drill presses, drills and rotary tools and stuff as if they're discussing a given..something that every one should have and know how to use. The tools I have are only screwdrivers and hammers and stuff..heck I thought I was overdoing it when I got more than one set of screwdrivers [emoji28] ...and then Marcus says he wants us to be inspired [emoji27]

N.B: the last time I tried fixing the light by the bathroom mirror there was a loud bang followed by darkness.

You mean I should be inspired now?? ...:?:

....and then Marcus says he wants us to be inspired [emoji27]

So why not be "inspired" to actually learn how to use tools your unfamiliar with? You should never stop learning and developing different skills. That's what life is all about. I'm sure if you actually put your mind to something you would be surprised at what you can do. The only one stopping you from doing anything is you. Everybody has a creative side and can make things if they put their mind to it.

What starts the whole process is a little "inspiration".

Awww now...I don't read any sarcasm at all.
I read someone that knows and embraces their limitations.

Take my husband for instance...I wish he would be more like that 'cause he will mess things up in a heartbeat !

He is not allowed to touch MY tools.

A lathe is one of the few tools I don't have...and if I had a few bucks I would be going to get a little one to play with...cause I like gadgets :)

I agree.
I always told myself that I wasn't creative until I made my first box mode, 3 years ago. It was just a repair job, using household tools but I really enjoyed it.
I then bought a cheap drill press. A year later I bought a micro mill and this year I bought a baby lathe.
The tools help make more complex designs but the main requirements are, an interest, patience and spare time.

@The.Drifter .. Marcus..I am sure you understand that I have great respect for your talent, yourself, and your work. If there is any sarcasm at all it was like Classy said primarily directed at myself for lacking the talent and patience that enables you to be a top notch guy in this particular area. What you're saying is true of course in a way, but remember that people receive different gifts and talents..No matter how much I study music I'll never be a Beethoven , or play guitar like Buddy Guy or Eric Clapton..By the same token I don't have the gift that you have and that sets you apart from most of us. Not belittling myself BTW..I'm sure I am more gifted in other things and I don't blame destiny for anything (well..maybe slightly after seeing your work..but it's admiration really).

And in all fairness I know I would never be able to do the work that you do as good as you do. I might be able to succeed in making a cap or a sleeve for my nuppin that would look funny as hell!..but nothing close to what you made. So yes..I do acknowledge my limitations and capacities..I'm comfortable with that..and I make fun of it.

Does this clarify things a bit?

Yes Tamer, I understand where your coming from now, thanks for clarifying.

I might be able to succeed in making a cap or a sleeve for my nuppin that would look funny as hell!.

See, that's at least a start :thumb: My first attempts at making anything looked horrendous but were functional, my second one came out a wee bit better, the third a little better than that. I wasn't given any "God Given Talents" to make stuff, I just kept at it repeatedly thru many many failures until I finally started liking what I made.

I'm a firm believer that anyone can acomplish anything if they set their mind to it. The hardest part is just starting. I do believe that you can do it Tamer, might not be perfect the first time but I bet after a couple tries you might just surprise yourself ;)

Now that I actually have a basement & a garage, I was thinking about getting some new tools... mainly a lathe & drill press. Peter sent along some remnants from my pinch block, and I'd love to try making some drip tips (as well as maybe delrin tips & top caps). So if anyone has any advice on relatively inexpensive but decent tools, let me know. I don't have any particular talent for this stuff, but I don't think you really need to in order to make cool stuff... I, for one, am very inspired by Marcus's work, and (of course) Peter's, and all the modders here. So, on that note, here's my squonk porn:

Very Nice Heny Etta, I Love how the grains compliment the squonk hole :) And the colors are amazing :thumb:

I got a friend who uses one of these to make little projects on. Its quite versatile in how you can use it and the price is pretty good if your just wanting to make simple things like drip tips and caps.

That's a pretty handy looking little bit of machinery there, Marcus.

I have been recently considering doing some tweaking of my lathe to allow me to make small parts. I run an unplugged shop, but the flywheel setup doesn't currently adjust small enough. Would really like to make my own drip tips.
