Enough is ENOUGH…

The other day at work I pulled out my 510. It was the first hit I had taken in about 2 hours so I was looking forward to that mild rush and the billowing cloud of vapor my custom VG base juice makes.

I gave it a short primer hit and then a nice, loooooooong draw. As I started to blow it out I knew something was wrong. Sure, there was a huge plum of vapor. My VG base makes fog. It was the taste. It was also the WORST “Blue Foam Hit” I have ever had. It was so bad I almost chucked my breakfast. The only way it could have been worse is if I had wedged a piece of blue foam under the bridge and dripped batter acid on it. I had to soak my atomizer in D-Coke for 2 days to get the chemical taste out of it.

That was it.

I have tried this mod and that technique with varied results. Blue Foam has been the best. But once and a while I’d get a mild Foam hit. I have been toying with the idea of “Stainless Steel“ steel wool for a while…

Lustersheen Stainless Steel Hand Pads ~ Fine - eBay (item 380193770544 end time May-02-10 17:03:12 PDT)

Just never got around to it. I liked the concept of the “Brass Screen” mod but was concerned when people started to post that they noticed green corrosion on the brass. Brass is a highly reactive metal and some oxidations are very hazardous to your health. I tried stainless steel screen but found them hard to form and prone to leakage. So I revisited the “Stainless Steel” steel wool idea.

Not wanting to wait for an e-Bay delivery I went on a quest to find “Stainless Steel” steel wool localy. No Luck anywhere. But I remember seeing “Stainless Steel” scrubbers at Target to clean BBQ grills one time. Sure enough, they had them. So I sprang for a buck two ninety eight for a two pack.

Evercare Stainless Silver Scrubbers 2-pk. : Target

When I got home and opened the package. They seemed do-able. The pad looks like it is made up of One, Mile Long coil of stainless steel spring. It looked and felt clean with no residue on it. But to make sure they didn’t have any oil on it I gave one a quick rinse in acetone and then boil it for 10 minutes.

The first 510 cartridge I stuffed I tried to be Very scientific. I measured the cart and did mental calculations of how long a piece to cut and how much to fold and squish the coil. I folded a piece over three time and then rolled it into a cylinder. Every so gently, I worked it into the cart. With an old pair of scissors, I trimmed it to length and then pulled it out and put the trimmed end in the cart first.

It really looked fantastic. I put a drop of my favorite juice, Cherry Pineapple onto the cart and it disappeared without any effort. I put 12 more drops in an turned it upside-down. It Didn’t Leak! Damn, I felt like the Thomas Edison of e-Cigs. I put it into a fresh atomizer and checked it for fit. Everything looked good. I screwed on a fully charge battery. I gave it a shake or two to prime the bridge. Show Time.

The first hit was good. Really Good. It was about the cleanest hit I had ever taken. I took another and another. It was Perfect. I sat back in my chair and thought. “If they give a Nobel Peace Prize in the field of e-Cig Improvement, I just won It!”.

But then the gurgling started. The next hit or two start to get worse. After 3 or 4 more I got a taste of juice in my mouth. I was crushed. It leaked and flooded my atomizer. I was so close. In a fit of rage I yanked off the cart, pulled out the stainless and flicked it across the room.

Still enraged, I pulled off a huge piece of the scrubby pad and just started to jam it into the cart. Fool with me? I’ll jam scrubby pad down your throat. I used a screwdriver to pack in the stainless until I couldn't force it in any longer. Not really caring, I cut off the excess. It still had a few wires hanging over the edge. Who cares? It isn’t going to work. Another waste of time. That’s why they don’t give Peace Prizes for e-Cigs mods.

I put 13 drops in cart and put it into a new atomizer. Didn’t even check to see if the bridge was lined up. Just pushed it. Let’s get on with our lives and put this mod down as a failure. I didn’t really hit. Just a wisp. The second hit was a little better. But after 4 hits it was working. It was actually working very well. Very clean taste and good vapor. But just to quell all thought of success, I put it tip down in a shot glass for an hour knowing that it would flood.

I was completely shocked when after an hour it had not leaked. It hit as well as Blue Foam but with a cleaner taste. I tried 6 more drops in it just to make it leak. It didn’t. Could it be that you have to stuff the heck out of it like your ...... at the world to make a good fill?

That was two days ago. I have tested it every which way I can think of. Not had any leaks or problem what so ever. I’ve tried another cart to see if it was a fluke and it is the same thing. Leaks if I try to baby it. Doesn’t leak if I force it in. I’ve pulled out the scrubby pad an looked at it with a glass. It looks Identical to the store bought pad. No discoloration. No Rust.

Curious to see if others have tried this and what they think.

BTW – 5 days without analog has made me very restless. Sorry for the long post.

Hey zoiDman! It's been almost 3 months now. Any updates? Still using the mod?

I think you're on to something here. I believe the trick is matching the wick effect between the atty SS mesh and the cart which you appeared to accomplish by heavily stuffing the cart. As already mentioned steel shards shorting out the nichrome coil would be a concern.

I may try filling a cart with actual SS mesh material from a blown atty as soon as that occurs. Wicking should be a perfect match - no leaking, etc.

...

I suppose I do have some Updates…

I got so feed up with atty’s dying at $10 a piece and not having a good way to switch to different flavors that I now use carto’s 100% of the time.

That said, here is some additional info on SS filler material for carts.

I pulled out a 2 month old cart with SS Scrubby in it and examined the filler material. There was no signs of Oxidation, Discoloring or Leakage. The juice inside didn’t smell bad, so in the interest of Science, I pulled out my last atty and plugged in the cart.

I gave it a shake or two. There was no leakage. So I waited about 5 minutes to let the bridge prime.

I dialed 9-1 on my cell phone and kept my finger on the 1 as I took the first hit. Hmmmm. Not too bad, No Blindness or Raging Tracers. A slight taste of Caramel Apple. I took another and it was better and by the 3rd hit it was hitting like a Champ. I guess I can take my finger off the 1 button on my cell phone. So it seems that after 2 months of sitting in a drawer there were no ill effects.

When I was all wrapped up in Cart Mod Madness (CMM), I was going to try this for filler material.

But like I said, I tried cartos which cured my CMM affliction. I thought that Stainless Steel “Steel Wool” might be easier to fit into the cart. Perhaps someone can try it and post their results here. As a test, I tried regular Steel Wool and it worked great. But the Plain Old Steel (POS) used to make regular Steel Wool Oxidized after a few days and took on a Metallic taste.

So there it is. A mod worth trying if you have CMM and are looking for that “Better” filler material.

BTW player57… Love that picture of your cat. Is she a “Sink Drinker”?

Really appreciate the update zoiDman.

Not really a CMM any more as like you I've switched to carto's and doubt I'll ever go back. Yep, I tried 'em all - blue foam, PTB, etc, etc. Then I started dripping. Better flavor but was a hassle as I am a heavy 5ml/day vaper. So I gave carto's (eGO version from Cignot) a try and whoa - excellent flavor like dripping and lasts a long time. Took one of the carto's apart and noticed that the vapor was not pulled through the poly like a cart but was directed through the sides. This appears to be the reason the flavor was as good as dripping.

Hopefully somebody will come up with a carto that uses SS rather than the poly. Along with a drip tip it would be near perfect - Easy to clean, easy to fill, no chance of burning the poly, last long time..

BTW- The cats name was Bud. On warm days he would always snuggle up to the bathtub spigot and love it (weird).

Thanks again, zoiDman..

I toyed with the idea of dripping out of desperation. Or even stuffing a drip tip with Scrubby pad. I was ready to chuck the entire e-Cig thing in the trash and call it a waste of money. Carts just weren’t cutting it.

Luckily, the first Carto I tried was a good one and it saved me from going back to analogs.

----

There is a cat in my house also. It just appeared one mourning Demanding warm Milk, Free Food and a Place to Crash. I swear she would probably die if I just put water in a dish for her. She will Not drink it.

When she wants a drink she walks down the hall, goes in the bath room and jumps up on the counter. If I do not follow her, she will curl up in the sink and wait.

When I do come in, she gives me a snotty look and gets out of the sink. She wants me to turn on the cold water slowly so it doesn’t splash her paws. Then she puts her front paws in the sink and drinks from the running water. It’s hysterical.

Snotty look noted, properly trained human also noted. We have a variety of cats & dogs in the house thanks to the wife. Don't mind though as they keep our house and garden pest free. Just wish they would stop depositing the remnants at the foot of our bed. I'll have to start taking pictures so you can see what I'm talking about - last fatality was a baby mole.

Glad to see the the carto's kept you off the analogs. For me it was simply the end of an evolutionary process. Long on flavor and long on juice capacity - what more could you want?

Bought a .01g capable scale a few days ago (eBay $13) to determine how much juice to add to the carto. Found it to be indispensable. I'm not sure but I might have learned this little trick from you.. Reading so many excellent posts on this forum it's hard to keep track.

Heheh...my cat seems to consider me a mixture of a roommate, daddy, and an older brother. He whines for things, doesn't always get what he wants. I swear he's at least as smart as any 10 year old I've ever met. ^_^

On topic....I'm kinda glad you did it lol..I was a little scared to try because every single thing of steel wool or metal scrubbers I've ever had has rusted after a time. Iron oxide is great for thermite, but not so great for inhalation. :(

What if you took the poly out of the carto and replaced it with steel wool [or if you're cheap steal wool :p]?

That might not be so great of an idea. The atomizer wire would be in direct contact with SS steel wool. At best, It might give your lip a shock. :p

The oxidation factor is why I went with Stainless Steel. A person could try reg steel wool for a one time use just to see if it worked. But if they are going to do anything more than a test, Stainless Steel is the only way to go.

Thermite? It has been a long time since I burned any holes with Thermite. I seem to recall though, when we made it, we used a mixture of Aluminum Oxide and Titanium Oxide. Aluminum is easier to get going. Once it does, the Titanium burns White and Hot.

Old thread, but i figured i'd update it. I have some steel wool pads with soap that i found in a closet after we bought this house. They've been sitting there since for over 2 years..and who knows how long before that when we bought the place lol. Anyway i found this thread and decided to try them out, i rinsed the soap completely, then spread out the steel wool and put it in a pan of boiling water. 10 minutes later i come back to check on it and the water is BROWN!? ok i'm thinking thats bad..dump out the water and rinse the wool pad..then realize there's rust deposits all over the inside of the pot i used to boil the thing EW. I used the same scrubby to clean up the rust, and threw it in the trash. I dont suggest using steel wool in your cartridges..Might run up to target and get the stainless steel mentioned.
