I know you've moved on a bit from this point, but I have the same microscope (Age concern £3.99) & have no problem running it on my son's eeepc701 running ubuntu NBR, using a webcam program called "Cheese."

Bought 2 netbooks for my children for Xmas.
I installed netbook remix (Ubuntu) on both.
Found Cheese in the remix version of ubuntu but not in the 9.10
Since then I have got my own version of cheese and the microscope works great.
