Geezz we were going to watch the last 2 discs of SuoerNatural Season 6 when our DVD player decided to die.
I saw a Blu Ray player at Big Lots for $55 last week.

OK people tell me about Blue-ray. I know nothing at all except I know you can't play a Blue Ray DVD on a regular DVD player. Can you play a regular DVD on a Blue ray player?
Yes you can. Br players support both br and standard DVD.
Br is a much higher capacity disk, with higher quality encoding. On higher res, 1920x1080, screens it is noticeably sharper.

No special connection needed? I have a regular Directv box for the TV which is not HD. I'm way behind the technology stuff.
It's the way to go if you have a high definition TV Fran. I have a 50" plasma HDTV and love my BR player. Our local library has a great selection of HD movies on Blu Ray, and they get new releases in pretty quickly 
If you don't have an HDTV and have no plans to get one, you won't be able to take advantage of the better quality video from it.

Blu ray is a high definition video format (ie, better picture quality). Some Blu ray players can even up convert standard DVD's to HD like quality. If you have a HD TV, it's worth it to get one. Some cost about the same as a standard DVD player. If you have Netflix you can rent your movies in Blu ray format.

Not necessarily. You could still use it for standard DVD's. If you plan to upgrade to a HDTV at some point, you'll already have the player to take advantage of it.
In order to have an HD TV I have to have Directv come and change the cable box to an HD one.
