One suggestion I've heard from photographers who check tens of thousands worth of camera gear, is to check a starter gun and declare it in your checked bag... gives it a bit more scrutiny, but more secure.
I always leave some special magazines on top, And I usually pack some really..... INTERESTING items when I fly which deters them from looking in my secret compartments.

The best thing to do with vaping gear is carry it on so you can explain it if need be, except chargers, cables... I haven't had a problem.
All liquids go in the quart bag, as well as a few airline size liquor bottles. They want $7 for a drink on the plane now! I'll buy shampoo at my destination!!!
