I cut a strip of kgd that's about 50% wider than the id of the coil, gently twist one end, and use a piece of 22ga kanthal to poke it through the vertical coil until the cotton touches the bottom of the deck. Then I pull the kanthal poker and go at the cotton from the underside with it, undoing the twisted end a bit. Then I cut the cotton more or less flush with the top of the coil with a pair of scissors.
At that point, I'll take my juice eye dropper and gently force juice into the cotton from the top, until the cotton is soaked and the well begins filling up.
Works for me, YMMV.
